Orthofeet publishes more of the numbers that matter to a clinician than almost any mainstream shoe brand, and the Coral is a good example: a weight, a drop, four widths from A to 2E, and — unusually — the actual thickness of the insole you can take out. That last figure is the one nobody else gives you, and it is the difference between guessing whether your orthotic will fit and knowing roughly how much room you are working with. This page reads that spec sheet the way it would be read in a clinic.
What Orthofeet says the Coral is
Orthofeet sells the Coral as a women’s stretchable, water-repellent knit sneaker built for all-day support. The company’s product data gives a weight of 9.7 oz at a women’s size 7 medium, a heel-to-toe drop of 15.7 mm, a synthetic fabric upper, ten colours and four widths, and lists it as model number 981.
The part that matters most is a company-wide statement rather than a model-specific one: Orthofeet says all of its shoes are made with extra depth and come with removable orthotic insoles that are a quarter of an inch thick, explicitly so that a wearer can substitute their own custom orthotics. The Coral also ships with an Arch Booster and spacers, which are additional inserts for adjusting fit and arch height.

What the spec sheet suggests — and what only a test can answer
Publishing the insole thickness is the single most useful thing on this spec sheet. A quarter of an inch is roughly 6.35 mm, and that is the volume you get back when you pull the stock insole out. Most custom functional orthotics arrive somewhere near that thickness at the heel, which is why an extra-depth shoe with a removable quarter-inch insole is the standard recommendation for someone collecting a new device. No mainstream athletic brand publishes this number at all. It still is not a measured internal depth — the shoe’s actual volume with a real orthotic seated in it is what our Orthotic Volume Rating exists to express — but it is a far better starting point than the silence everyone else offers.
A 15.7 mm drop is high, and worth understanding rather than worrying about. Most running shoes sit between 4 and 12 mm. A drop near 16 mm tips the foot forward, which shortens the demand on the calf and the Achilles and reduces the stretch across the plantar fascia at the moment the heel lifts. For plantar fasciitis, an irritable Achilles, or a calf that has been chronically tight, that is often welcome and is a plausible part of why these shoes get recommended. The trade-off is that a high drop encourages loading further forward on the foot, which is not what you want if the painful thing is the forefoot — metatarsalgia, a neuroma, or a plantar plate problem. The same figure is a help or a hindrance depending entirely on where the pain is.
Four widths starting at A is unusual and quietly important. Most brands treat narrow feet as though they do not exist, and a narrow foot in a medium shoe slides — which causes the rubbing, the callus and the toe clawing that get blamed on the foot rather than the fit. Offering A through 2E in one model means a genuinely wide range of feet can be fitted in the same shoe, which matters more than any midsole technology.
Where a stretch upper helps and where it does not. A stretchable knit accommodates a bunion or a hammertoe by giving where a leather shoe would press, and for a sensitive, arthritic or deformed forefoot that is exactly right. But stretch and control are opposites: an upper that yields for a prominence also yields when the foot tries to push against it. For a foot that needs to be held, this is the wrong upper. For a foot that needs to be left alone, it is the right one.
Who this shoe is probably for
Read from the published specification, not from wear. Treat these as hypotheses the test will confirm or overturn.
- You are collecting a custom orthotic — extra depth plus a published quarter-inch removable insole is the combination you want.
- Plantar fasciitis or a tight Achilles — a 15.7 mm drop reduces demand on the calf and fascia at push-off.
- A narrow foot — an A width in a supportive sneaker is genuinely hard to find.
- A bunion, hammertoe or sensitive forefoot — a stretch knit gives where leather presses.
- Your pain is in the forefoot — metatarsalgia, a neuroma or a plantar plate injury may not enjoy a high drop loading you further forward.
- You need the shoe to control the foot — a stretch upper yields by design, and no heel-counter or torsional figure is published.
- You want a men’s version of this exact model — the Coral is sold as a women’s shoe.
- You need a measured internal depth for a bulky device — the quarter-inch figure is the insole’s thickness, not the shoe’s volume.
What changed from the previous version
Orthofeet does not publish version numbers or a changelog for the Coral in the way running brands do — the model number 981 identifies the style rather than a model year. That is normal for this end of the market and it is an advantage for anyone who needs to re-buy the same shoe: there is no annual revision quietly changing the fit under you.
Because there is no versioned predecessor to compare against, there is nothing here for us to report, and we are not going to manufacture a comparison to fill the section.

What do podiatrists think of Orthofeet shoes?
The useful thing about Orthofeet, from a clinician’s side of the desk, is that they publish figures other brands hide — a weight, a drop, four widths, and the actual thickness of the insole you can remove. That makes it possible to reason about whether a device will fit before the patient spends the money. Where we would be careful is in reading a stretch upper as support: it accommodates a deformity well and controls a foot poorly, and those are different jobs. We have not measured this pair, so there is no score on this page.
Which is better, Vionic or Orthofeet?
They solve different problems. Orthofeet builds around extra depth and a removable insole — the shoe is designed to be a carrier for your device, in widths from A to 2E. Vionic builds around its own contoured orthotic footbed — the shoe is designed to be the device. If you already wear a custom orthotic, the Orthofeet approach is the one that gets out of your way. Do Orthofeet run large or small?
Orthofeet’s own sizing guidance on the Coral tells you to order the size that fits rather than to size up or down, and the model is offered in half sizes from 5 to 12 across four widths. The more useful point is that this shoe ships with an Arch Booster and spacers — extra inserts specifically for taking up volume — so a shoe that feels slightly roomy can be adjusted, which is unusual and is part of what you are paying for. Fit reports vary between individuals in a way no spec sheet resolves.
What are the reviews and complaints about Orthofeet shoes?
We do not aggregate other people’s reviews and present them as findings — that is not testing, and it is how a lot of misinformation about footwear spreads. What we can tell you is where the published specification leaves real gaps: Orthofeet does not publish stack heights, an internal toe-box width, a heel-counter stiffness or a torsional rigidity for the Coral.
