The short answer
For a flat foot that hurts, the insole that works is the one that matches the arch your foot actually makes, has a deep heel cup, is stiff enough to resist being flattened by your body weight, and fits in your shoe once the stock insole comes out. Those four things, in that order. Almost every failed insole purchase fails on one of them — and the most common failure is the fourth, which has nothing to do with the insole at all.
What an insole can and cannot do
An insole does not lift your arch back into place. Under body weight, even a rigid device deflects. What it does is change where and how quickly load passes through the foot: it supports the arch through part of its range so the soft tissue is not taking the whole excursion, it cups the heel so the fat pad stays under the bone instead of spreading out sideways, and it slows the rate at which the foot rolls in.
That is a real mechanical effect and it is often enough to stop the pain. It is not arch restoration, and any product promising that is overselling.
Match the insole to your foot, not to a picture of an arch
This is where most purchases go wrong. People buy the insole with the most dramatic arch, reasoning that a flat foot needs a big arch. Then it hurts, and they conclude insoles do not work for them.
Run the heel-rise test first — stand, rise onto your toes, and watch the inside of the foot. If an arch appears, that is roughly the shape your insole should support: the arch your foot can make, not the one on the packaging. If no arch appears, your foot is rigid, and a tall arch profile will press into the middle of your foot all day with nowhere for the foot to go. The four things that separate insoles
1. Shell rigidity
Insoles run from soft foam through semi-rigid to a genuinely rigid plastic or composite shell. Push your thumb hard into the arch. Soft foam bottoms out immediately and does nothing for a heavy or collapsing foot. A semi-rigid shell gives a little and returns — this is the right answer for most symptomatic flexible flat feet. A fully rigid shell is for feet that overwhelm everything else, and it is the most likely to cause new pain if it is not the right shape for you.
2. Arch height and, more importantly, arch length
Two insoles with the same arch height can feel completely different because the apex sits in different places. If the highest point lands behind your arch it feels like nothing; if it lands too far forward it feels like a stone. When you try an insole on, the pressure should feel spread along the inside of the foot, not concentrated at a point.
3. Heel cup depth — the underrated one
The deep cup is doing more work than the arch on most flat feet. It holds the heel fat pad under the heel bone, where it acts as the cushion it evolved to be, instead of letting it squash out to the sides. It also keeps the heel vertical, and the heel is where the collapse starts. Given a choice between a taller arch and a deeper heel cup, take the heel cup.
4. Volume — the reason most insoles fail
An insole is only as good as the shoe it lives in. Add a 5 mm device to a shoe with no room and you raise your foot out of the heel counter, tighten the toe box, and lose the support the shoe was providing. The stock insole has to come out first, every time, and some shoes will still not have the depth.

Until your candidate shoe has one, check it by hand: pull the footbed out, drop the insole in, put the shoe on, and confirm your heel still sits down inside the counter.

Birkenstock Blue Footbed — for dress shoes and anything shallow
The category everyone forgets. A flat foot does not stop being flat when you put on smart shoes, but almost every insole above is too bulky for them. The cork footbed is contoured, moulds slightly to the foot with wear, and comes in narrow and three-quarter versions built for exactly this problem. For work shoes, boots and anything that will not take a trainer insole, this is usually the answer.
Skip it if: you want immediate firm correction — cork is supportive but forgiving and takes a couple of weeks to bed in. It is also not the choice for a heavily collapsing arch that needs a rigid shell.
A word on gel inserts
The soft gel inserts sold in every chemist are the most-bought and least-useful product in this category for a flat foot. They cushion, which feels pleasant for a few minutes, and they have no shell, which means they do nothing to stop the arch collapsing. If a gel insert is what stands between you and nothing at all, it beats nothing for shock absorption on a hard floor. It is not arch support, it should not be bought as arch support, and if you have tried one and concluded that insoles do not work for you, you have not yet tried an insole.
Over-the-counter or custom?
The honest answer is that a good over-the-counter insole is the correct first purchase for most people with flexible, symptomatic flat feet, and it costs a fraction of a custom device. Try that first.
Custom orthotics earn their price in specific situations:
- The two feet are meaningfully different from each other, so one off-the-shelf shape cannot serve both.
- There is a fixed deformity to accommodate rather than a flexible one to support.
- Two or three well-chosen over-the-counter devices have already failed.
- The diagnosis is progressive collapsing foot deformity, where the shape of the support has to be prescribed rather than picked.
- There is a bony prominence, a healed fracture or a neuropathic foot that needs offloading built into a specific spot.

Fitting: the part people skip
- Remove the stock insole. Not optional. Use it as a template for trimming.
- Trim from the toe end only, a little at a time, following the outline of the old footbed. You cannot put material back.
- Check the heel first. If your heel slips when you walk, the insole is too thick for that shoe. That is a shoe problem, not an insole problem.
- Wear them in. An hour or two the first day, building over a week or ten days. A semi-rigid device that is comfortable from minute one is often too soft to do anything.
- Expect a fair trial to take about two weeks. Mild arch fatigue as you adapt is normal. Sharp pain, numbness or a new hot spot is not — stop and reassess the shape.
Who should skip these
- Anyone with a painless flat foot. There is no good evidence that supporting an asymptomatic flat foot prevents anything. Buy comfortable shoes and move on.
- Rigid flat feet, if the insole has a tall arch. You will be pressing a hard shape into a foot that cannot yield to it.

Do insoles for flat feet actually work?
For symptomatic flexible flat feet, they work often enough to be the standard first-line recommendation — usually alongside a shoe with a firm heel counter, and alongside calf stretching, which is doing more of the work than most people realise. For painless flat feet there is nothing to fix.
Should I get arch support or cushioning?
Whether the arch moves decides it. A moving arch wants support. A stiff arch wants cushioning and even pressure. Doing it the other way round is the most common self-prescribing mistake in this category.
How long do insoles last?
Foam-based devices soften long before they look worn — six to twelve months of daily wear is realistic. A rigid shell can last several years, but the top cover will not. If your old symptoms are creeping back and the insole is over a year old, that is usually your answer.
Can I move one pair between shoes?
Physically yes, and it is a false economy. Different shoes have different internal volume and heel depth, so an insole that sits correctly in one can lift your heel out of another. If you have shoes you wear daily, insole each of them.
Do I need a different insole for running?
Often, yes — running devices are typically lower-profile and more flexible than a walking or work device, because the foot needs to travel more. A rigid work orthotic dropped into a running shoe is a common source of new arch pain.
