The short answer
Standing all day is a support problem before it is a cushioning problem. Soft foam feels wonderful for the first hour and has usually bottomed out by hour six; a semi-rigid shell with a deep heel cup is what is still working at the end of a shift. Buy support first, then as much cushioning as you can get on top of it.
And answer one question before you buy: are you standing still, or are you on your feet and moving? The two produce different symptoms and want different things.
Standing still and walking all day are not the same job
This distinction gets flattened in almost every buying guide, and it is the most useful thing on this page.
If you are largely static — a bench, a till, a machine, an operating table
Your muscles are holding one position for hours. Blood pools, the calf pump barely works, and the arch is under sustained load with no unloading phase. The symptoms skew toward heavy, aching legs, swelling by evening, and a deep ache through the arch and heel.
What helps: firm support that holds the arch without you having to, an antifatigue mat wherever you stand, deliberate movement — shifting weight, a rail to put one foot on, a walk every hour — and, for a lot of people in this group, graduated compression socks. This is a repetitive-loading problem. Thousands of near-identical steps on a hard, unvarying surface, which loads the same tissues the same way with no relief. The symptoms skew toward heel pain, arch pain, forefoot burning and shin ache.

What to look for
A semi-rigid shell
Push your thumb hard into the arch of the insole. If it flattens completely, it is a comfort product, not a support one — and by mid-shift it will be neither. You want something that deflects a little and returns. This is the single most important variable and it is the one that soft, heavily marketed gel products fail.
A deep heel cup
Long hours on hard floors are punishing to the heel fat pad. A deep cup keeps that pad compressed under the heel bone where it acts as a cushion, rather than letting it spread out to the sides where it does nothing. If your first steps in the morning hurt, this feature is doing more for you than the arch.
Full length, and cushioning on top of the shell
For long days you want the cushioning layered over the support, not instead of it. A full-length device also avoids the ridge you get where a three-quarter insole ends under the ball of the foot — which matters over ten hours far more than it does over one.
A top cover that manages moisture
Ten hours in a closed shoe is a humid environment, and softened skin blisters. A wicking or antimicrobial cover is a small feature with an outsized effect on how the end of a shift feels.
Volume that matches the shoe
The best insole in the world does nothing if it lifts your heel out of the counter. Pull the stock footbed out first, always. The things that help that are not insoles
Being honest about this is more useful than selling you a footbed.
- Rotate two pairs of shoes. Midsole foam needs roughly a day to recover its properties. Alternating pairs makes both last longer and is the cheapest real improvement available to most people on their feet all day.
- An antifatigue mat at any station where you stand still. For static work this outperforms most footwear changes.
- Calf stretching. A tight calf loads the arch and forefoot harder for the whole shift. Two minutes, twice a day, does more than most people believe.

- Sitting down properly on breaks. Elevating the feet for ten minutes resets the venous pooling that makes hour nine feel worse than hour five.
Who should skip these

- Rigid flat feet, and anyone with pain on the outside of the foot. A tall firm arch will concentrate pressure and can move pain to the lateral column.
- Anyone whose shoes are already tight. An insole makes a shoe smaller. Fix the shoe first.

If one is all that stands between you and a flat factory liner, it is better than nothing for shock absorption.
