If you have a wide foot and you play baseball or softball, your shopping list is one brand long. I read every baseball and softball cleat New Balance, Nike, Under Armour, adidas and Mizuno sell on their US sites this week. New Balance sells all 17 of its men’s baseball models in a 2E, its women’s fastpitch cleats in a wide, and four of its kids’ cleats in a wide. The other four brands sell one width, and nobody sells a 4E. Here is what to buy, by player, and what to do when a wide is still not wide enough.
We have not bench-tested baseball or softball cleats. There is no Podiatrist Tested score or seal on this page and no measured numbers for any cleat. Every width, weight, size run and fit note on this page comes from the brand’s own US website, read 16 October 2026, and is attributed to that brand. The fitting and clinical guidance is mine. How we test.
The short answer
- Men and older teens: New Balance in 2E. Every men’s baseball model on its US site, 17 in all, comes in a standard D and a wide 2E: metal, TPU, molded and turf.
- Women’s fastpitch: the New Balance Velo v5 in Wide (D), in metal, molded and turf versions. Wider than that? New Balance says its men’s FuelCell Lindor 3 Comp can also be worn for softball, and it comes in 2E.
- Kids: four New Balance youth cleats come in a Wide (W): the 3000v8 Jnr RM, the 3000 Energy Youth RM, the Velo v5 Youth and the Velo v5 Rubber Molded.
- Nike, Under Armour, adidas and Mizuno: one width on every baseball and softball cleat we found.
- Wide foot with forefoot pain: I would rather see you in molded or TPU studs, or a turf shoe for practice, than in metal spikes. More studs spread the load.
- Do not fix width with length. A cleat a size too long moves the flex point and the spike plate away from your foot.
Only one baseball brand sells cleats by width
New Balance prints a width on every baseball cleat it sells, and its men’s range is not a token wide model. Filtering its men’s baseball shoes to Wide (2E) returns every one of them, from the $94.99 molded and turf shoes to the $159.99 Ohtani:
| New Balance model | Type | Widths | Price (newbalance.com) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3000v8 Metal | Metal | D, 2E | $109.99 |
| 3000v8 Mid Metal | Metal, mid-cut | D, 2E | $114.99 |
| 3000v8 Energy Metal | Metal | D, 2E | $119.99 |
| 3000v8 TPU | TPU | D, 2E | $94.99 |
| 3000v8 Mid TPU | TPU, mid-cut | D, 2E | $104.99 |
| 3000v8 Turf | Turf | D, 2E | $94.99 |
| 3000v8 Energy Turf | Turf | D, 2E | $104.99 |
| FuelCell 4040 v8 | Metal, 7 spikes | D, 2E | $109.99 |
| 4040 Energy | Metal, 7 spikes | D, 2E | $119.99 |
| FuelCell 4040 v8 Molded | Molded | D, 2E | $94.99 |
| FuelCell 4040 v8 Turf-Trainer | Turf trainer | D, 2E | $94.99 |
| FuelCell Ohtani 1 | Metal, 10 spikes | D, 2E | $159.99 |
| Ohtani Energy Metal | Metal | D, 2E | $159.99 |
| FuelCell Ohtani 1 Trainer | Trainer | D, 2E | $119.99 |
| FuelCell Lindor 3 Comp | TPU molded | D, 2E | $149.99 |
| FuelCell Lindor 3 Off-Field | Trainer | D, 2E | $119.99 |
| FuelCell Compv4 | TPU molded | D, 2E | $159.99 |
Source: the men’s baseball category on newbalance.com, filtered to Wide (2E), and the product pages of the 3000v8 Metal, FuelCell 4040 v8, 4040 Energy, FuelCell Ohtani 1, FuelCell Lindor 3 Comp and FuelCell Compv4, read 16 October 2026. Sizes are men’s; the 3000v8 Metal runs from 4 to 15. Prices change; check before you buy.
Two things stand out. The wide is not a premium upsell: New Balance’s cheapest baseball shoes come in 2E just like its most expensive. And it covers every surface, so a wide-footed player can stay in one fit from the game cleat to the turf trainer he warms up in.

Why a narrow cleat hurts in baseball and softball
The pattern I see most often is a teenage catcher with sore feet by July. The outside of both forefeet is blistered, there is a callus over the little toe joint, and the big toe joints ache after a doubleheader. The cleats are a standard D on a foot that measures a 2E. Put the same player in a 2E and most of it settles within a couple of weeks.
Baseball and softball load a wide forefoot in ways a sneaker never faces:
- Catchers squat on bent toes. The squat holds the big toe joints bent back under body weight for most of a game. A narrow toe box squeezes those joints and the two small sesamoid bones underneath them, which is how catchers end up with sesamoiditis.
- The spike plate is narrower than your foot. On a wide foot the outside of the forefoot sits over the edge of a stiff plate, and every cut on the bases and every push off the rubber loads that edge. That is how a tailor’s bunion flares.
- Metal spikes concentrate pressure. The New Balance metal cleats we read carry 7 to 10 spikes; molded and TPU plates spread the same load over more, shorter studs. A wide forefoot hanging over the plate feels that difference first.
- Hard stops jam the toes. Rounding a base, landing a pitch and pulling up on a fly ball drive the toes into the front of the cleat. A shoe that is too narrow pushes them together and up, which is where black toenails and corns come from.
I know of no study that has measured what a narrow cleat does to the forefoot of a baseball or softball player, in sports with hundreds of thousands of high-school players. That is a study someone should fund. Until it is done, the advice here comes from the brands’ own fit data and from what I see in clinic every season.
Why sizing up is the wrong fix
The instinct, especially with a teenager, is to buy a size bigger. It does buy a little width, because every size is slightly wider. But it moves three things you need to stay where they are: the flex point, which should sit under the ball of your foot; the spike layout under the forefoot; and the heel cup. The result is heel slip and blisters, and a foot that slides forward every time you stop, which is the black-toenail mechanism.
Buy the wide in your true length. If you are between sizes, go half a size up for length; never a full size for width.
The shortlist
Men and older teens
Any New Balance baseball cleat in 2E. If your forefoot is sore, start with the FuelCell 4040 v8 Molded or the 3000v8 TPU (both $94.99), which spread the load over more studs than a metal plate. If your league and your feet are happy in metal, the 3000v8 Metal ($109.99) is the straightforward choice, with a Fresh Foam midsole and a mesh and synthetic upper, per New Balance. For practice and turf, the 3000v8 Turf or the FuelCell 4040 v8 Turf-Trainer in 2E.

Women’s fastpitch
The New Balance Velo v5 comes in a Standard (B) and a Wide (D) in every version on New Balance’s US site: metal (8 spikes, $104.99, women’s sizes 5 to 13), molded ($94.99) and turf ($94.99). A women’s D is a true wide; it is the same letter as a men’s standard.
If a women’s D is still tight, go to New Balance’s men’s cleats in 2E. New Balance says its FuelCell Lindor 3 Comp, a TPU molded cleat, “can also be worn by softball players”, and its filter on the men’s baseball page lists women’s widths of Wide (D) and X-Wide (2E). Convert your size first: New Balance lists a men’s size a size and a half below the women’s, so a women’s 9 is a men’s 7.5.

Kids
Four New Balance youth cleats come in a Standard (M) and a Wide (W):
| Youth cleat | Type | Widths | Kids’ sizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3000v8 Jnr RM | Rubber molded | M, W | 10.5 to 7 |
| 3000 Energy Youth RM | Rubber molded | M, W | 10.5 to 7 |
| Velo v5 Rubber Molded | Rubber molded (softball) | M, W | 10.5 to 3 |
| Velo v5 Youth | TPU molded (softball) | M, W | 3.5 to 7 |
Source: each cleat’s product page on newbalance.com, read 16 October 2026. The FuelCell Lindor 3 Youth was offered in Standard (M) only.
Buy for the foot your child has now, with a thumb’s width at the toe. A cleat two sizes big slides, blisters and trips. And if a child of 8 to 14 limps off with heel pain after games, think of Sever’s disease, an irritated growth plate at the back of the heel, before you blame the cleat’s width; see shoes for Sever’s disease.

Wider than a 2E
None of the five brands sells a 4E baseball or softball cleat. If you buy 4E in sneakers, a New Balance 2E in molded or TPU, in your true length, is the closest you will get. Skip the bottom eyelets, use a thin flat insole, and check that the outside of your forefoot is on the plate, not hanging over it. A forefoot that still hangs over the edge needs a podiatrist to look at padding and a plan, not a bigger size.
Metal, molded or turf for a wide foot
- Metal: the most grip on dirt and grass, and the most concentrated pressure under the forefoot. Fine for a pain-free foot in a cleat that is wide enough.
- Molded and TPU: more, shorter studs that spread the load. My first choice for a wide foot with forefoot pain, and the only choice in many youth leagues, which do not allow metal; check your league’s rules before you buy.
- Turf shoes and trainers: the most forgiving thing a wide forefoot can wear on a field. Use them for practice, batting cages, warm-ups and coaching, and save your feet for game day.
Fitting a wide foot into a baseball or softball cleat
- Try cleats on late in the day, in game socks. Feet swell through the day, and thick socks take up real room.
- Get in your position. A catcher should squat in the store; a pitcher should stride. If the little toe or the outside of the forefoot bulges over the edge of the sole, the cleat is too narrow, whatever the size says.
- Check length with your thumb. About a thumb’s width between your longest toe and the end is right; more than that and your foot will slide.
- Re-lace the forefoot. Skip the first set of eyelets, or lace them loosely, to take pressure off the widest part of the foot while keeping the top eyelets firm.
- Swap the insole carefully. A thin, flat replacement insole can buy a little room; a thick arch support takes it away. If you wear orthotics, bring them to the fitting.
- Do not count on stretch. Most baseball cleat uppers are synthetic or mesh with synthetic overlays, and they barely stretch.
When a wider cleat is not the answer
A wider cleat fixes a shoe problem. It does not fix a foot problem, and some of what wide-footed players blame on their cleats is something else:
- Pain under the ball of the big toe that is worst in a squat or on push-off is often sesamoiditis; see shoes for sesamoiditis.
- A big toe joint that is stiff, swollen or hurts on push-off after it was bent back, sliding or landing, is turf toe until proven otherwise; see shoes for turf toe.
- Pain on the top or outside of the foot that is worse when you run and sore to press can be a stress fracture. That needs an X-ray, not a new cleat; see shoes for stress fractures.
- A painful bump at the base of the little toe that stays sore off the field is a tailor’s bunion; see shoes for a tailor’s bunion.
- A red, sore edge of the big toenail after a season of jammed toes is an ingrown toenail; see shoes for ingrown toenails.
Pain that wakes you at night, swelling that does not settle in a week, or a foot you cannot put weight on needs an exam and probably an X-ray, not a new cleat.
Questions patients ask
Does Nike make wide baseball cleats?
No, not as of October 2026. Of 72 results for “wide baseball cleats” on Nike’s US site, the only wide was a football cleat. Nike’s baseball and softball cleats come in one width.
Does Under Armour make wide baseball cleats?
No. Under Armour’s Wide Fit category holds football cleats, running shoes and boots, but no baseball or softball cleat.
Does Mizuno make wide baseball or softball cleats?
Not in the US. Mizuno’s 22 baseball and 19 softball shoes on its US site are listed in one width.
What baseball cleats come in 2E?
New Balance’s whole men’s range: all 17 models on its US site, including the 3000v8, the FuelCell 4040 v8, the FuelCell Ohtani 1, the FuelCell Lindor 3 Comp and the FuelCell Compv4, in metal, TPU, molded and turf. We found no other brand selling a 2E baseball cleat.
Are there 4E baseball cleats?
Not from New Balance, Nike, Under Armour, adidas or Mizuno. The widest baseball cleats sold by a major brand are New Balance’s 2E.
Are there wide softball cleats for women?
Yes. New Balance sells its women’s Velo v5 in a Standard (B) and a Wide (D), in metal, molded and turf. For a foot wider than a women’s D, New Balance says its men’s FuelCell Lindor 3 Comp can also be worn by softball players, and it comes in 2E.
Do kids’ baseball cleats come in wide?
From New Balance, yes: the 3000v8 Jnr RM, 3000 Energy Youth RM, Velo v5 Rubber Molded and Velo v5 Youth all come in a Wide (W). We found no wide youth baseball cleat from the other four brands.
Are metal or molded cleats better for wide feet?
Molded or TPU, if your forefoot hurts. More, shorter studs spread the load, while a metal plate concentrates it on 7 to 10 spikes. A pain-free foot in a cleat that is wide enough can wear metal where the league allows it.
Should I size up in baseball cleats if I have wide feet?
No. Going bigger to gain width moves the flex point and the spike plate away from your foot and lets it slide forward, which causes blisters and black toenails. Buy a wide in your true length.
