Do Altras Have a Wide Toe Box? 17 Altras Measured

Yes, and it is not close. A lab has measured 17 current Altras at the big toe, and every one of them has more room there than the average shoe in its category, by 3.8 to 11 mm. The roomiest is the Lone Peak 9 at 85.3 mm; the average road shoe measures 73.2 mm. What Altra does not have is a wide shoe in the usual sense. Its own site says so, and the lab agrees: Altras are roomy at the toes, close to average across the ball of the foot.

This is a measurement page, and we did not take the measurements. Every toe box figure here comes from RunRepeat’s lab, which fills each shoe with a setting gel and measures the mould, read from its published reviews on 16 October 2026. Altra publishes none of these numbers. Altra’s fit names and widths are from altrarunning.com, read the same day. There is no Podiatrist Tested score or seal on this page; the interpretation and clinical advice are mine. How we test.

The short answer

  • Do Altras have a wide toe box? Yes. All 17 current Altras the lab has measured beat their category average at the big toe, the narrowest by 3.8 mm and the roomiest by 11 mm.
  • The roomiest: the Lone Peak 9 (85.3 mm, trail), the Experience Wild 2 (83.3 mm, trail) and, on the road, the Escalante Racer 2 (83.3 mm), FWD VIA 2 (82.4 mm), Paradigm 8 (82.3 mm) and Torin 9 (82.2 mm).
  • Roomy toes, ordinary width: across the ball of the foot, Altras measure close to average. Altra itself says a FootShape shoe “is not a ‘wide’ shoe”. If your whole forefoot is wide, buy one of the six Altras sold in a Wide.
  • Altra’s fit names are a rough guide: the Original-fit Lone Peak 9 is the roomiest, but the Standard-fit Torin 9 and Experience Wild 2 measured roomier than the Original-fit Escalante 5 and Olympus 6.
  • The catch is zero drop. Most Altras have no heel-to-toe drop, which loads the calf and Achilles. If that is a problem for you, the FWD VIA 2 gives you Altra’s toe box with a drop.

Which Altra has the widest toe box?

Here is the latest version of every Altra the lab has measured, roomiest first. “At the big toe” is the number that matters for bunions and crowded toes; “at the widest point” is across the ball of the foot; toe box height is the room over the top of the toes.

Altra At the big toe At the widest point Toe box height Vs. category average
Lone Peak 9 (trail) 85.3 mm 98.5 mm 26.8 mm +11.0 mm
Escalante Racer 2 83.3 mm 102.4 mm 34.1 mm +10.1 mm

Superior 7 (trail) 78.1 mm 96.6 mm 24.7 mm +3.8 mm

Source: RunRepeat lab measurements, read from each shoe’s review on runrepeat.com, 16 October 2026. Category averages are the lab’s: 73.2 mm at the big toe across 362 road running shoes and 74.3 mm across 134 trail shoes; at the widest point, 95.2 mm for road and 95.7 mm for trail.

Two things stand out. The narrowest Altra on the list, the Superior 7, still has more room at the big toe than the roomiest ASICS everyday trainer. And the gap is almost all at the toes: at the widest point, the Paradigm 8 (95.8 mm), Torin 9 (97.7 mm) and Vanish Carbon 2 (94.4 mm) are within a few millimetres of the average shoe. That is exactly what Altra says it builds.

Altra’s own fit names, tested against the lab

Altra says every shoe has its “signature FootShape” and sorts its range into three fits. In its words, Original is “our roomiest toe box”, naming the Lone Peak, Escalante and Olympus; Standard gives “plenty of room” with a secure midfoot, naming the Experience, Torin and Timp; and Racing has a snug midfoot. And it is blunt about width: “A FootShape™ shoe is not a ‘wide’ shoe. It’s a shoe with a roomy toe box.”

The lab broadly agrees, with an important exception. The Original-fit Lone Peak 9 is the roomiest Altra measured. But the Standard-fit Torin 9 (82.2 mm) and Experience Wild 2 (83.3 mm) measured roomier at the big toe than the Original-fit Escalante 5 (80.8 mm) and Olympus 6 (81.1 mm). Averaged, the Original shoes beat the Standard ones by about a millimetre. Use Altra’s fit names to narrow the field, then use the numbers to choose.

Altra toe boxes change between versions

Altra is more consistent than most brands, but a new version is still a new toe box. Of the 11 Altra updates the lab has measured both sides of, 5 lost room at the big toe, 5 gained it and 1 did not change:

Update Before After Change at the big toe
Superior 6 → 7 82.4 mm 78.1 mm −4.3 mm
Experience Flow 2 → 3 82.6 mm 79.3 mm −3.3 mm
FWD VIA → FWD VIA 2 84.5 mm 82.4 mm −2.1 mm
Escalante 4 → 5 82.4 mm 80.8 mm −1.6 mm
Torin 8 → 9 83.6 mm 82.2 mm −1.4 mm
Torin 7 → 8 83.6 mm 83.6 mm No change
Paradigm 7 → 8 81.7 mm 82.3 mm +0.6 mm
Lone Peak 8 → 9 84.2 mm 85.3 mm +1.1 mm
Experience Flow → Flow 2 80.6 mm 82.6 mm +2.0 mm
Timp 5 → 6 79.6 mm 81.9 mm +2.3 mm
Experience Wild → Wild 2 79.3 mm 83.3 mm +4.0 mm

Source: RunRepeat lab measurements of both versions, read 16 October 2026.

Even after losing 4.3 mm, the Superior 7 is roomier at the toes than every current ASICS road shoe. Altra’s worst case is most brands’ best. Still, if a Torin 8 or Experience Flow 2 was your shoe, the new version is a little narrower, and a sore bunion will notice a millimetre or two.

Altra Wide: when you need more than the toe box

Because Altras are built roomy at the toes rather than wide across the ball, a foot that is wide all the way across can still feel the sides. For that foot Altra sells a Wide. On its US site this week the Wides were the Torin 8, Torin 9, Torin ST, Lone Peak 9, Lone Peak 9+ and Paradigm 8, in men’s and women’s sizes. Altra describes them as “a wide mid foot in addition to a roomy toe box”, and our reviews of the Torin 9 and Paradigm 8 list the Wide as a 2E. The lab measured the regular width only.

Which Altra for bunions, hammer toes and neuromas

  • Bunion: almost any Altra beats almost any other running shoe at the big toe. On the road, the Torin 9 or Paradigm 8 (which adds a guide rail for flat feet), in Wide if your forefoot is broad; on trail, the Lone Peak 9. See shoes for bunions.
  • Hammer toes: height matters as much as width. The Escalante Racer 2 has the most room over the toes (34.1 mm), and among everyday shoes the Olympus 275 (29.9 mm) and VIA Olympus 2 (29.2 mm) are the tallest; the Superior 7 (24.7 mm) is the lowest. See shoes for hammer toes.
  • Morton’s neuroma: a toe box that lets the metatarsal heads spread is the first thing I change, and Altra does that better than anyone. See shoes for Morton’s neuroma.
  • Achilles or calf trouble: be careful with zero drop. Switch gradually, or start with the FWD VIA 2, which keeps Altra’s toe box with a drop. Our assessment of Altra covers the trade-off in full.

Altra vs Topo, HOKA, Brooks and ASICS

Across the road shoes in our ranking of 202 running shoes, Altra averages 82.1 mm at the big toe, Topo 81.4 mm, ASICS 72.4 mm, Brooks 72.0 mm and HOKA 71.5 mm. Topo is the only brand in Altra’s league, and it builds most of its shoes with a drop; see Topo vs Altra. For the detail on the others, see HOKA, Brooks and ASICS. Altra’s boots lead our hiking boot ranking too.

Questions patients ask

Do Altras run wide?

At the toes, yes, by a long way. Across the ball of the foot, no: most measure close to average there. Altra itself says its FootShape shoes are not wide shoes but shoes with a roomy toe box.

Which Altra has the widest toe box?

The Lone Peak 9, at 85.3 mm at the big toe. On the road, the Escalante Racer 2 (83.3 mm), FWD VIA 2 (82.4 mm), Paradigm 8 (82.3 mm) and Torin 9 (82.2 mm).

Are Altras good for bunions?

For the toe box, yes: Altra is the roomiest of the major running brands a lab has measured, and every current Altra beats its category average at the big toe. If the zero drop does not suit you, look at the FWD VIA 2 or at Topo.

Is the Torin 9 narrower than the Torin 8?

Slightly. The lab measured the Torin 9 at 82.2 mm at the big toe against 83.6 mm for the Torin 8. It is still one of the roomiest road shoes measured; the Torin 8 vs 9 comparison has the rest.

Does Altra make wide shoes?

Yes, six: the Torin 8, Torin 9, Torin ST, Lone Peak 9, Lone Peak 9+ and Paradigm 8, for men and women. Altra describes its Wides as adding a wide midfoot to the roomy toe box.

Should I size up in Altra?

Not for width. Altra’s toe box already gives the toes room. Size for length, and choose a Wide if the sides of your forefoot feel the shoe.
