Are KURU Shoes Good for Your Feet? A Foot Surgeon Reads the Claims
KURU sells on one claim: protecting the heel fat pad. A foot and ankle surgeon on what that claim gets right, what is unproven, and who should be careful.

KURU sells almost entirely on one claim: that its shoes protect the heel fat pad. That is an unusual claim, because unlike most footwear marketing it points at a real anatomical structure with a real pathology attached to it. This page sets out what KURU actually claims, in their words, and what a foot and ankle surgeon can and cannot confirm about it. We have not measured or worn a pair, so there is no score and no seal here.

The heel pad claim, from a foot surgeon
The heel fat pad is real, and it matters more than most people realise. It is a specialised shock-absorbing structure — chambers of fat held in fibrous septae directly under the calcaneus — and it is not ordinary body fat. It does not come back once it is gone.
Heel fat pad atrophy is a genuine diagnosis, and it is one of the more frustrating ones to treat. It tends to arrive with age, with high mileage, after repeated corticosteroid injection into the heel, and in people who have spent decades on hard floors. The pain is different from plantar fasciitis: it sits directly under the centre of the heel bone, it is worse barefoot on a hard floor, and it does not have the classic first-steps-in-the-morning pattern. Patients often describe it as walking on the bone. Once the pad has thinned, treatment is about substituting cushioning from outside, because you cannot rebuild it.
So a shoe designed around containing and cushioning the heel is aimed at something that genuinely exists, which is more than can be said for a lot of footwear marketing. That is not the same as evidence that this shoe does it.
What the claim establishes — and what it does not
What is fair to say
- The mechanism is plausible and anatomically coherent. Cupping the heel to stop the fat pad splaying sideways under load is the same principle behind a deep heel cup in a prescription orthotic, which is a standard treatment for exactly this problem.
- KURU has built a whole shoe around one structure rather than bolting a comfort insole into a generic last. Design intent counts for something.
- KURU does not claim a podiatrist certification or an APMA seal. Given how loosely those are used elsewhere in this market, not overclaiming is a point in their favour.
What it does not establish
- No published clinical evidence. KURU cites no study showing the heel pad is measurably better protected, or that outcomes improve in people with fat pad atrophy. A patent is a description of a design, not proof that it works.
- The evidence offered is testimonial. Tens of thousands of ratings tell you people are satisfied. They cannot separate the technology from a new, well-cushioned shoe replacing a worn-out one — which relieves heel pain regardless of brand.
- Nothing is published about the insole’s removability, which is the first thing anyone in a custom orthotic needs to know.
- No stack height, no drop, no weight in the technology material. There is nothing to compare against another shoe.

Who KURU may suit — and who should be careful
Reasonable candidates
- Central heel pain that is worse barefoot on hard floors and lacks the classic first-step-in-the-morning pattern. That presentation points at the fat pad, and a deeply cupped, well-cushioned heel is the right direction to try.
- People who have already been told they have a thin heel pad, or who have had repeated heel injections.
- People who stand on concrete all day and have worked through the usual cushioned brands without relief.
Be careful if
- You wear a prescribed custom orthotic. KURU does not publish whether the insole lifts out. A shoe built around its own heel geometry may also fight a device with its own heel cup. Fit them together before buying.
- You have not had heel pain diagnosed. Plantar fasciitis, a stress fracture, Baxter’s nerve entrapment and fat pad atrophy all present as heel pain and are treated differently. Buying a shoe for the wrong one wastes months.
- You have diabetes or numbness. Any shoe change on an insensate foot is a clinical decision.
- You are buying on the reviews alone. A new cushioned shoe relieves heel pain for a while whatever is on the box. That is the effect the testimonials cannot separate out.

Everything that would let us score it. Questions people ask about KURU
Are KURU shoes actually good for your feet?
The design targets a real structure and the reasoning behind it is sound. What does not exist publicly is evidence that it outperforms any other well-cushioned, deep-heeled shoe. If you have central heel pain and cushioned shoes have not helped, it is a reasonable thing to try. If you are buying it expecting a clinically proven device, that is not what has been demonstrated.
Are KURU shoes podiatrist approved?
KURU does not claim a podiatrist certification or an APMA seal, and we have not found one. Take that as a neutral fact rather than a mark against them — those designations mean less than they appear to, which we explain on the APMA seal page. No shoe on this site is “approved” by us either, until it has been measured and worn.
Are KURU shoes good for plantar fasciitis?
Possibly, but note that plantar fasciitis and fat pad atrophy are different problems in nearly the same place. The fascia inserts at the front-inside corner of the heel; the fat pad sits under its centre. KURU’s stated design intent is aimed at the second. Cushioning helps both to a degree, but if your pain is worst on the first few steps out of bed, that points at the fascia, and calf and fascia loading work will do more than any shoe.
Can I put orthotics in KURU shoes?
KURU does not publish this, which is a real gap for anyone in a prescribed device. Even where an insole lifts out, a shoe engineered around its own heel cup can conflict with an orthotic that has one of its own. Take the device to the fitting.
