An ingrown toenail is the edge of the nail plate cutting into the skin fold beside it. The nail does not grow sideways on its own; something presses the skin onto the nail edge, or presses the nail into the skin, over and over until the skin breaks, swells and gets infected. In the clinic, that ‘something’ is almost always one of three things: a nail trimmed round and short, a foot that pronates so the big toe rolls onto its inside edge, or a shoe that squeezes the toes together and pushes down on the nail. Shoes are the one you can change today. This page sets out what a shoe has to do for an inflamed toe, names the current models whose manufacturer-published fit matches, and is clear that no shoe cures a nail that has already grown into the skin — that is a five-minute office procedure.
What an ingrown toenail needs from a shoe
That is the brief. The shoes below are the current models whose manufacturer-published fit fits it — none has been measured by us yet.
- Width at the toes, not just at the ball. The nail edge is injured when the big toe is pushed against the second toe or the side of the shoe. A shoe sold in 2E, 4E or 6E, or built on a foot-shaped last, takes that sideways pressure off.
- Height over the nail. Downward pressure from a low, stiff toe box is the pressure that drives the nail into the fold. Look for a soft, unstructured or knit toe cap and a brand that describes a high or ‘anatomical’ toe box.
- A firm heel and midfoot so the foot does not slide forward. A roomy toe box only helps if the foot stays back in it. A secure heel counter and a lacing you can snug over the instep keep the toes off the front of the shoe on a downhill.
- Pronation control if your big toe rolls inward. A flat, rolling foot loads the inside edge of the big toenail on every step. A stability shoe or an insole with a firm medial arch changes that.
- A thumb’s width in front of the longest toe, measured standing, in the afternoon, in the socks you will wear. Most of the ingrown-nail shoes I see in the clinic are half a size short.
From the clinicA shoe is prevention, not treatment. If the toe is red, swollen, wet or draining, the nail edge is already under the skin and needs to be lifted or removed — a partial nail avulsion under a local anaesthetic takes minutes, and when the problem keeps coming back we treat the nail root at the same time so that edge never grows again. Soaking, cotton under the nail and antibiotics alone do not fix an edge that is buried. What the right shoe does is stop the next one, and let the toe you just had treated heal without being pressed on.

The catch is the zero drop: no heel lift changes the load on the calf and the plantar fascia, and it is the wrong choice if you also have heel pain or an Achilles problem.

Three habits that prevent more ingrown nails than any shoe
- Cut the nail straight across and not shorter than the end of the toe. A rounded, short corner is the single commonest cause we see.
- Fit shoes in the afternoon, standing, in your real socks, with a thumb’s width beyond the longest toe — and re-measure; feet lengthen with age.
- If your big toe rolls inward, address the pronation with a stability shoe or an insole. The nail on the inside edge will keep going in until you do.

Can shoes cause ingrown toenails?
Yes — tight, pointed or shallow shoes press the skin fold onto the nail edge, and a short shoe jams the toe forward against the front on every step. That is why the fix is width, toe-box height and a proper length, in that order.
What are the best running shoes for ingrown toenails?
For a neutral foot, a foot-shaped last (Altra Torin 9, Topo Ultrafly 6) or a conventional shoe bought in a wide grade. For a foot that pronates, a stability shoe in the right width (Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25), because the inward roll is what loads the inside edge of the big toenail.
Are New Balance shoes good for ingrown toenails?
The width range is why people say so: the 928v3 goes to 6E and the walking lines are sold in real width grades. New Balance does not publish toe-box dimensions, so the benefit is the width grade, not a shape claim.
Will an ingrown toenail heal on its own if I change shoes?
A mild one that is not yet under the skin often settles with room, warm soaks and correct trimming. One that is red, swollen or draining has a nail edge buried in the fold and needs it lifted or removed by a podiatrist; a shoe will not reach it.
Should I go up a size?
Go up in width first, then in length only if there is not a thumb’s width beyond the longest toe. Sizing up in length alone lets the foot slide forward and crushes the toes at the front — the opposite of what you want.
