Best Weightlifting Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis (2026): Why a Raised Heel Helps, and When It Doesn’t

Spec analysis — not yet tested · Migrated from Michigan Foot Doctors · Updated September 2026

Spec analysis — not yet tested. The shoes named on this page have not been through the Podiatrist Tested bench yet. Every figure below is the manufacturer’s own published number, attributed by name; the fit notes are clinical reasoning about the design, not our measurements; nothing here carries a score or the seal. Each model is replaced by a measured review as it goes through testing. How we test →

Lifters with plantar fasciitis are usually told two contradictory things: ‘train barefoot or flat for foot strength’ and ‘never go flat with heel pain.’ Both are half right, and the deciding factor is the lift. In a squat or a clean, a raised, rigid heel reduces how far the ankle has to bend, which reduces tension in the calf and the plantar fascia at the bottom of the movement — that is why a proper weightlifting shoe is often the most comfortable shoe a plantar fasciitis patient owns. In a deadlift, the same heel moves the bar further and most lifters go flat. Here is the reasoning, and the current lifting shoes whose published specs fit it.

The brief

What a plantar-fasciitis foot needs from a lifting shoe

  • A raised, incompressible heel (roughly 15–25 mm). This is the mechanism: less ankle dorsiflexion needed, less calf and fascia tension at depth. All three heeled shoes below publish a 22 mm heel.
  • A rigid, non-compressing sole. Foam that compresses under load lets the heel drift. A hard TPU or wood heel does not.
  • A midfoot strap over laces. Locks the heel into the heel counter so the fat pad stays under the heel bone.
  • Lifting only. These shoes are hostile for walking: no cushioning, no flex. Change out of them between the platform and the car.
  • For deadlifts, a flat shoe with a low drop — not barefoot on a hard floor if the heel is currently painful.
From the clinic

The mistake I correct most often is the lifter who squats in a soft running shoe because it ‘cushions the heel’. The foam compresses unevenly under a loaded bar, the heel rocks, and the arch collapses under exactly the load that hurts. A hard heeled shoe feels less comfortable in the shop and far better under the bar.

Current lifting shoes that fit the brief

Three heeled lifters and one flat trainer. Two shoes that appeared on the older version of this page are no longer sold in the US and are noted at the end rather than recommended.

Heeled Olympic lifting shoe · the widest-used platform shoe

Nike Romaleos 4 Spec analysis

Nike’s flagship lifter: a rigid midsole with a heel lift, and what Nike describes as ‘wide straps over the laces’ for lockdown. Nike publishes almost no numbers for it — no heel height, no weight, no strap count — which is unusual for a category where those figures are the buying decision. It is here because it is the most widely available lifter and the one most patients already own; it is not here because Nike documents it well.

Skip it if:

  • You want a documented heel height before buying — the two adidas/Reebok shoes below publish 22 mm.
  • You have a wide forefoot; Nike offers no width options and the Romaleos runs narrow by reputation.
  • You mostly deadlift — a heeled shoe is the wrong tool.

Heeled Olympic lifting shoe · 22 mm published heel

adidas Adipower Weightlifting 3 Spec analysis

adidas publishes the number that matters: a 22 mm heel lift. One strap plus laces, a textile upper, and adidas’ fit note is ‘true to size’ in a single width. For a plantar-fasciitis lifter this is the cleanest choice on paper: the heel height is documented, the sole is rigid, and the strap sits over the midfoot rather than the ankle.

Skip it if:

  • You need a wide fit — single width only.
  • You want a lower heel for a more upright, hip-dominant squat; 22 mm is a full-height lifter.
  • You plan to walk or do conditioning in them — this is a platform-only shoe.

Heeled lifting shoe · Pump fit system

Reebok Legacy Lifter III Spec analysis

Reebok’s lifter adds an inflatable Pump fit system to the usual strap-and-lace lockdown, which lets a lifter with a narrow heel and a wide forefoot tighten the heel without cinching the toes. The 22 mm heel figure comes from Rogue Fitness’s listing — Reebok’s own product pages returned errors when we checked, so the number is retailer-reported until we measure it.

Flat trainer for deadlifts and accessory work · 4 mm drop

New Balance Minimus TR v2 Spec analysis

For deadlifts, carries and general strength work a flat, low-drop trainer is the standard, and the Minimus TR v2 is the one I suggest for a lifter with heel pain because it is flat without being a barefoot shoe: New Balance publishes a 4 mm drop, a FuelCell midsole and — unusually for the category — a 2E width. If the heel is acutely painful, even this is too flat for walking days; it is a deadlift-and-accessory shoe.

Skip it if:

  • Your heel pain is at its worst right now — a 4 mm drop on a hard floor will aggravate it; squat in a heeled shoe and deadlift later.
  • You squat in it and lack ankle mobility — that is exactly the case for a heeled shoe.
  • You want a barefoot-style zero drop; this is deliberately not that.

Two shoes we are no longer recommending

The inov-8 Fastlift Power G 380 (22 mm heel, one strap, 380 g per inov-8) is sold out on inov-8’s US and international stores and the brand’s lifting category is currently empty. The ASICS Conviction X 2 is not sold on ASICS’ US site and, per ASICS UK, is a 4 mm-drop cross-trainer rather than a heeled lifter — it was never the right shoe for the squat-with-heel-pain problem this page is about. Both stay off the list until they are available and documented.

How to use a heeled shoe when your heel hurts

  • Put it on at the rack and take it off at the rack. Walking the gym floor in a rigid 22 mm heel is a different load from squatting in it.
  • Keep the stock insole unless it is paper-thin; a thick cushioned insole in a lifting shoe defeats the rigid platform. If you use an orthotic for daily wear, do not transplant it into the lifter without checking the heel still sits down in the counter.
  • Warm up the calf before the first working set — a tight calf is the single most common driver of plantar fasciitis in lifters.

Questions patients ask

Is it better to squat barefoot with plantar fasciitis?

Usually not while the heel is painful. Barefoot squatting demands more ankle dorsiflexion and puts the bare heel on a hard floor. A heeled lifting shoe does the opposite on both counts.

Should I deadlift in weightlifting shoes if I have plantar fasciitis?

Most lifters deadlift flat because a heel lengthens the pull. With heel pain, a flat trainer with a small drop, like the Minimus TR, is the compromise; go barefoot only on a padded surface and once the acute pain has settled.

Do lifting shoes cause plantar fasciitis?

No — a rigid heel unloads the fascia during the lift. Walking around in them, or wearing soft, collapsing shoes for heavy squats, is the more common footwear contributor.

What heel height should I choose?

The three heeled shoes here all publish or are listed at 22 mm, which is the standard height. Lower-heeled hybrids exist for lifters with good ankle mobility; for this diagnosis, the standard height is the safer default.

What happens next on this page. Each shoe above is queued for the bench: weight in grams, heel and forefoot stack, drop, internal toe-box width and depth, an Orthotic Volume Rating, and real miles on recorded surfaces. When a model has been through that process this page will say so, carry its scorecard, and — if it earns it — the seal. What the seal requires →
