The 928 is the white leather walking shoe that half the waiting room is wearing, and it has stayed at v3 for a long time while everything around it got a new version every eighteen months. That is not neglect — it is a shoe built for a job that has not changed: walk a lot, on hard floors, on a foot that rolls in, with room for a device. It is also the shoe people panic about, because a stable model that never updates looks discontinued from the outside. It is not. Below is what New Balance publishes about it and what a spec sheet can and cannot tell you.

What New Balance says the 928v3 is

New Balance describes the 928v3 as a motion-control walking shoe. Its listing names three things: ROLLBAR, which the brand says “reinforces the medial and lateral sides of the midsole, reducing rear-foot movement and promoting a stable, controlled walking gait”; ABZORB cushioning, which it describes as absorbing impact “at the heel and forefoot”; and a premium leather upper for structured support that “holds up through daily wear”.

It is sold in the walking category rather than the running category, and it was listed at $159.99 and in stock on newbalance.com when this page was written. Whatever else is true of the 928, it is not discontinued.

What the spec sheet suggests — and what only a test can answer

This is a shoe designed around hours, not miles. Everything New Balance names — leather that holds its shape, a rearfoot post, cushioning placed at heel and forefoot rather than spread evenly — points at the same user: someone upright on a hard floor for a long shift, or someone walking daily for cardiovascular reasons rather than for sport. Nurses, teachers, warehouse staff, retirees under instruction to walk thirty minutes a day. Reading the spec sheet as a running shoe’s will mislead you.

Leather is a real clinical variable and it cuts both ways. A structured leather upper resists the slow collapse that lets a foot slide medially inside a soft mesh shoe, which is the point. But leather does not stretch to accommodate a bunion, a hammertoe or a dorsal exostosis the way engineered mesh does — it presses on them. If you have a prominence that has ever been red or callused at the end of a day, the upper on this shoe is the thing to be careful about, not the midsole.

The unanswered question is depth. The 928 has a reputation for taking an orthotic, and that reputation is probably deserved — but New Balance does not publish an internal depth, does not publish whether the insole is removable, and does not publish a stack height. “It has always worked for my patients” is a clinical impression, not a measurement, and this site was built specifically to stop treating the first as though it were the second. An Orthotic Volume Rating is what settles it.

A model that sits at v3 for years is telling you something useful. In footwear, frequent revisions usually serve marketing rather than feet, and every revision is a risk to the person who found a shoe that fits. A long-lived version is a genuine advantage for anyone who has to re-buy the same shoe every eight months — it is one of the few things in this market that behaves like a medical supply rather than a fashion item.

Who this shoe is probably for

Read from the published specification, not from wear. Treat these as hypotheses the test will confirm or overturn.

  • Long shifts standing on hard floors — the whole specification points this way rather than at running.
  • A foot that rolls in and needs a rearfoot post, in a shoe that looks like a work shoe rather than a trainer.
  • You have found a shoe that works and need to re-buy it for years — the 928 has stayed at v3 for an unusually long time.
  • A workplace that requires leather uppers — many healthcare and kitchen dress codes do.
Wait for the test if
  • You have a bunion, hammertoe or bony prominence — leather presses on these where mesh gives, and no internal width is published.
  • You need to know it will take your orthotic before you buy — the depth figure that would answer that does not exist yet.
  • You want a light shoe — leather-uppered motion-control walkers are not light, and no shoe weight is published.
  • You are running rather than walking in it — it is sold in the walking category and the cushioning is placed accordingly.

What changed from the previous version

There is no v4. New Balance’s 928 walking range currently lists the 928v3 as the shoe you can buy, at $159.99 and in stock, and the PAA box on Google’s own results page for this model asks whether it has been discontinued — the answer, as of 9 September 2026, is no.

Questions people ask about the 928v3

Is the New Balance 928v3 a good walking shoe?

For its actual job — hours upright on hard floors, on a foot that pronates, in a shoe that passes a leather dress code — it is one of the few current shoes built deliberately for that and not adapted to it. The caveats are honest ones: leather does not accommodate a bony prominence, and New Balance publishes no weight, no drop and no internal depth, so a lot of what you would want to know before spending $159.99 is simply not on the record. We have not tested this pair, so there is no score here.

Has the New Balance 928v3 been discontinued?

No. On 9 September 2026 the 928v3 was listed at $159.99 and in stock on newbalance.com in both men’s and women’s. The confusion is understandable — the 928 has stayed at v3 while most models cycle versions every year or two — but a long-lived version is a feature for anyone who has to re-buy the same shoe, not a sign that it is going away.

Which New Balance shoes do podiatrists recommend?

The model follows the foot, not the other way round. For a broad, overpronating foot that also needs depth, the 928 and the 1540 are the two that come up most; for ordinary stability the 860; for neutral cushioning the 880. What is actually being chosen in each case is width, depth, heel-counter stiffness and torsional rigidity — four properties almost nobody publishes, which is why we measure them.

What shoe is comparable to the New Balance 928?

The closest like-for-like is the Brooks Addiction Walker 2 — also a leather-uppered walking shoe with a rearfoot support device, aimed at the same shift-worker use. The New Balance 1540v4 is the more aggressive option if you need width beyond 4E. We say “comparable” rather than “equivalent” deliberately: until both are on the bench, nobody can tell you whether they hold an orthotic the same way.
