HOKA Arahi 8 vs Saucony Guide 19 — Spec Comparison
Same price, same heel height, two different theories of stability. The Arahi 8 builds it from a firmer band of foam along the inside edge; the Guide 19 builds it from geometry. The measurable difference on paper is the forefoot: 31 mm against 29 mm, which is why the drops differ (6 mm vs 8 mm).

Be careful with the Guide 19 stack figures: published values differ between retailers and reviewers, which is why we label the source rather than presenting one number as settled. The drop (6 mm) is the manufacturer’s and is the more reliable of the two.
What a foot and ankle surgeon takes from this
The word “stability” is doing a lot of work in both marketing descriptions, and it does not mean the same thing in the two shoes. HOKA describes the Arahi’s J-Frame as a firmer density of foam wrapping the heel and running up the medial side — resistance placed where the foot would collapse inward. Saucony describes the Guide’s approach as a centring geometry, with the sidewalls and the shape of the midsole doing the work rather than a distinct firmer post. Both are legitimate; they suit different feet.
That matters clinically because pronation is not one problem. A foot that rolls in because the arch collapses under load responds to medial density — something firm in the right place at the right moment. A foot that is unstable because the heel is moving inside the shoe responds to a heel counter and a snug rearfoot, and a firmer medial post does very little. A spec sheet cannot tell you which of those you have. A gait assessment can, and if you have had recurrent injury rather than mild discomfort, that is the better first spend.
The one difference you may actually feel is the forefoot. Two extra millimetres under the ball of the foot on the Guide, and the 6 mm drop that follows from it, put marginally more demand on the calf and Achilles than the Arahi’s 8 mm. If your calf is tight or you have a history of Achilles trouble, that points gently toward the Arahi. It is a nudge, not a prescription, and it is smaller than the effect of the orthotic you may already be wearing.
Neither figure in that table tells you how much the shoe resists twisting. Torsional rigidity — how hard it is to wring the shoe like a towel — is the single measurement that would genuinely rank two stability shoes, and neither brand publishes it. It is on our bench protocol for exactly this reason.
Which one is worth trying first
Lean Arahi 8 if…
- Your arch collapses under load and you want firmer support placed on the inside edge.
- Your calf or Achilles is easily irritated — the 8 mm drop is the gentler of the two.
- You want a published weight; Saucony does not list one for the Guide 19.
Lean Guide 19 if…
- You dislike the feel of a distinct firm post under the arch and prefer a more uniform ride.
- You are comfortable in a 6 mm drop and have no Achilles history.
- You want the slightly thicker forefoot for ball-of-foot comfort.
What we cannot tell you until we test them
- Torsional rigidity. The measurement that would actually decide this comparison.
- Heel-counter stiffness. What holds the rearfoot — often more relevant than the medial post.
- Orthotic Volume Rating. Whether either takes a custom device; a stability shoe plus an orthotic can be too much of the same correction.
- Internal toe-box width and depth. Unpublished by both brands.
- The Guide 19’s true stack. Sources conflict; we will settle it with calipers.
