The 1540 is the shoe patients bring in when someone at a specialty store told them they needed “motion control”. It is one of the few current shoes built around that idea rather than around a foam, and it is made in the USA in widths up to 6E, which is why it keeps turning up on prescription pads. The v4 is a real change of character — New Balance moved it onto Fresh Foam X and added a dual insert system — and that matters more than usual, because the reason to buy a 1540 has always been its stiffness. Below is what New Balance publishes, what a retailer publishes where New Balance does not, and what only a bench test can settle.
What New Balance says the Fresh Foam X 1540v4 is
New Balance sells the 1540v4 as a Made in USA motion-control shoe. Its listing leads on the ROLLBAR stability post system, which the brand describes as helping to “control rear-foot movement for enhanced support”, and on a Fresh Foam X midsole it calls “our most cushioned Fresh Foam experience”, made with approximately 3% bio-based content. New Balance’s own product copy also names an engineered mesh upper and “a new dual insert system” for personalised fit.
Holabird Sports, a specialist running retailer, files the same shoe under both “neutral support” and “motion control” and describes it as being for combating overpronation, with an Ndurance rubber outsole. That double filing is not an error worth mocking — it is a fair reflection of a shoe that has drifted softer while keeping a rearfoot control device.

What the spec sheet suggests — and what only a test can answer
The 6E is the specification that actually matters. Almost nothing else on the market goes that wide in a supportive shoe. For a foot that is genuinely broad — a rheumatoid forefoot, a Charcot foot in a stable phase, a foot carrying a bunion that has already remodelled the metatarsal — width is not a comfort preference, it is whether the shoe can be worn at all. A 6E in a motion-control last is a small, specific, valuable thing, and it is why this model survives on prescription pads while flashier shoes come and go.
A 4 mm drop in a motion-control shoe is an unusual combination. Traditional motion-control shoes sat higher at the heel. Four millimetres puts more demand on the calf and the Achilles through the gait cycle. For most walkers that is unremarkable; for someone with an irritable Achilles or a calf that has been tight for years, a lower drop is a change their tissue has to absorb, and New Balance’s own note that the figure is approximate means the real number on a given pair could sit either side of it. This is exactly the sort of claim our bench exists to settle.
The dual insert system is the orthotic question in disguise. A shoe that ships with two inserts is telling you its internal volume is adjustable — and adjustable volume is the single most useful property a shoe can have for someone who wears a custom device. Pull the thicker insert, drop the orthotic in, and the shoe may accept a device that would otherwise raise the foot out of the heel counter. But “may” is doing real work in that sentence. Nobody publishes the internal depth, and until we put an actual orthotic in an actual pair and rate the volume, anyone telling you this shoe fits your device is guessing.
What the move to Fresh Foam X might cost. The clinical case for a 1540 was always that it was firm and it resisted twisting. A softer, more cushioned midsole is a pleasant thing to walk on and it is not automatically a downgrade — but softness and rearfoot control pull against each other, and the ROLLBAR post has to do more work in a softer shoe than it did in a firmer one. Whether the v4 still resists torsion the way the v3 did is a question with a physical answer, and we will not pretend to have it from a spec sheet.
Who this shoe is probably for
Read from the published specification, not from wear. Treat these as hypotheses the test will confirm or overturn.
- You need width beyond 4E — very few supportive shoes are made in 6E at all.
- You wear a custom orthotic and have struggled with volume — the dual insert system is designed to free up depth.
- You have been told you overpronate and want a shoe built around that rather than a neutral shoe with a firm post added.
- Made in USA matters to you — New Balance markets this model on that basis.
- Your Achilles or calf is currently irritable — 4 mm is a low drop for a shoe in this category and the figure is approximate by New Balance’s own admission.
- You are replacing a 1540v3 and chose it for stiffness — the v4 moved to a softer midsole and nobody has published a torsional comparison.
- You need a published stack height or toe-box measurement to plan around a deformity — neither figure exists yet, from anyone.
- You want a light shoe — 12.8 oz at a size 9 is heavy, and that is the retailer’s figure, not a measured one.
What changed from the previous version
New Balance does not publish a changelog, so this section is limited to what the brand states about the current model and what can be read from its own listings. Two things are stated by New Balance itself: the v4 runs a Fresh Foam X midsole, and it introduces a new dual insert system alongside an engineered mesh upper. The Fresh Foam X branding is new to this model line — it appears in the v4’s product name and did not in the v3’s.
Beyond that, comparisons circulating online — that the v4 is softer, less rigid, or roomier through the forefoot than the v3 — are secondhand, and some of them originate from AI summaries rather than from anyone who owned both pairs. We are not going to restate them as fact. If you are replacing a v3 specifically because it was stiff, treat that as an open question until this page carries measurements.

Is the New Balance 1540 a good shoe?
It is a durable, unusually wide, genuinely supportive shoe, and for the specific job of accommodating a broad or deformed foot that also needs rearfoot control, very little competes with it. Whether it is good for you depends on things nobody has published: how much internal depth it gives up to your orthotic, how stiff it is in torsion, and whether a 4 mm drop suits your calf. It is also expensive at $199.99 and heavy at 12.8 oz. We have not tested this pair, so there is no score on this page.
Which New Balance do podiatrists recommend?
Honestly, there is no single answer, and any page that gives you one is selling something. In a clinic the model follows the foot: a broad, overpronating foot that needs depth points toward the 1540 or the 928; a straightforward stability need points to the 860; a neutral cushioned need points to the 880 or 1080. What a podiatrist is actually choosing is width, depth, heel-counter stiffness and torsional rigidity — and those are the four things almost nobody publishes, which is the reason this site exists.
