The short answer

If you have flat feet and you run, the shoe you want is almost always a stability shoe: a normal cushioned trainer with extra structure around the heel and through the arch that resists the foot rolling inward. For most people that means the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24. If your feet are also wide, start with the New Balance 860v15. If you overpronate heavily or you are a heavier runner, look at the HOKA Gaviota 6. And if a podiatrist has told you your flat foot is flexible and you have no pain, you may not need a stability shoe at all — that distinction is the whole game, and it is the first thing this guide sorts out.

Flat feet and running: what actually goes wrong

A flat foot is one whose arch collapses toward the ground when you stand on it. Walking, that is a minor mechanical difference. Running, it is amplified: each stride lands with roughly three to four times your bodyweight, and a foot that pronates too far or for too long sends that load up the chain — into the plantar fascia, the shin, the knee and the hip. The point of a running shoe here is not to “fix” the arch. It is to slow and control that inward roll so the tissue above it is not overloaded thousands of times per run.

Two things follow. First, cushioning alone does not help a flat foot — a soft neutral shoe often lets it roll more. Second, the fit that matters is not the arch; it is how firmly the shoe holds the heel and how much it resists twisting through the middle. Those are the two things you can actually feel and test in a store, and we come back to them below.

Stability, motion control or neutral — which one you need

Before you buy anything, work out whether your flat foot is flexible or rigid, because they need opposite things.

The heel-rise test

Stand barefoot and rise up onto your toes. Watch your arch. If an arch appears as you rise and your heel rotates slightly inward, your flat foot is flexible — the joints still move, and a stability running shoe is exactly right. If no arch appears and the foot stays flat and stiff, it is rigid; a rigid flatfoot is often more comfortable in a well-cushioned neutral shoe with a roomy toe box than in a corrective one, and it is worth a conversation with a podiatrist before you load it with running miles.

When to see someone first

If one foot is flatter than the other and it came on in adulthood, or the inside of your ankle aches and swells, do not self-treat with a running shoe. That pattern can point to a posterior tibial tendon problem, which running can accelerate. A shoe is support, not a diagnosis.

What a running shoe can — and can’t — change

Three features do the real work. Everything else is marketing.

1. The heel counter

The cup at the back of the shoe. Squeeze it: on a stability shoe it should be firm and hold its shape. A firm heel counter keeps the heel bone from tipping inward at footstrike, which is where overpronation begins. A counter you can crush flat does nothing for a flat foot.

2. Torsional rigidity through the midfoot

Hold the shoe at heel and toe and twist. A flat foot needs a shoe that resists that twist through the arch — that resistance is what a “stability” or “support” shoe is really selling. Modern designs deliver it in different ways: Brooks with GuideRails on both sides of the heel, HOKA with a firmer J-Frame, ASICS and Saucony with a denser section of foam on the inside edge. All are attempts at the same goal; none is a wedge jammed under your arch.

3. Stack, drop and the wedge myth

A higher heel-to-toe drop (10–12 mm) can feel more supportive to a flat foot because it reduces the stretch demand on the arch and Achilles; a lower drop (4–6 mm) asks more of them. Neither is “correct” — it depends on your body and your history. What a shoe cannot do is rebuild your arch. If you need genuine arch fill, that comes from an insole or a custom orthotic inside the shoe, not from the shoe itself.

The five-minute test to run before you buy

  • Squeeze the heel counter. It should resist, not fold.
  • Twist the shoe. Heel in one hand, toe in the other. You want resistance through the middle, not a dishrag.
  • Bend it. It should flex at the ball of the foot, where your foot flexes — not in the arch.
  • Check the width honestly. A flat foot spreads. If the shoe only comes in one width and your foot hangs over the sole, size across, not up — most of the shoes below offer Wide and X-Wide.
  • Run in them, don’t walk. Overpronation shows up at running speed. A treadmill minute in the store tells you more than a lap of the shop floor.

For men

For women

Every pick here is sold in women’s sizing and widths. Women with narrow heels and flat forefeet often fit the 860v15 best — it offers a women’s 2A narrow as well as 2E wide, the broadest range in this list.

For wide flat feet

For the trail

None of the models above is a trail shoe, and we have not yet analysed a trail-specific stability model. Until we do, the honest answer is that a flat-footed trail runner is usually best served by a supportive road trainer on smooth trails, or by adding a supportive insole to a neutral trail shoe for grip on rough ground. We will label a trail pick here only once one has been through testing.

A note on Nike and neutral shoes

People search for Nike running shoes for flat feet constantly. Nike builds excellent neutral trainers, but has largely stepped back from dedicated stability models, which is why you will not find one recommended here yet — we only list shoes we have on file and can point to a specification for. If you love a neutral shoe, the flat-foot-friendly way to run in it is to add a supportive insole rather than to expect the shoe to control pronation on its own.

Who should skip a stability shoe

Stability shoes are not a default for everyone with flat arches. Skip or reconsider one if: your flat foot is rigid and painless (a cushioned neutral shoe usually feels better); you are a natural forefoot striker who does not land on the heel; or a clinician has put you on a strengthening plan and wants to see how your foot behaves in a less corrective shoe. Support you do not need can feel intrusive and, over months, let the foot do less work. If you are unsure which camp you are in, the heel-rise test above is the fastest way to tell.
