There is no score and no seal here on purpose: under our standard, a number only appears once a pair has been on the bench and on the road. The Beast is the last of the true motion-control shoes still in production, and the one we still write down for a heavy patient with a flat, collapsing foot. Brooks sells it as the Beast GTS for men and the Ariel GTS for women, and jumped the version number from 24 straight to 26. Here is what Brooks publishes, what it leaves to retailers, and what a foot and ankle surgeon reads into the numbers.
What Brooks says the Beast GTS 26 is
Brooks describes the Beast GTS 26 as “delivering maximum support and durable cushioning in a design that can accommodate orthotic inserts”. Support comes from GuideRails™, which Brooks says are “designed to support your body in its natural motion path while helping to keep excess motion in check”, on a nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 midsole with a RoadTack rubber outsole. The women’s counterpart is the Ariel GTS 26 — same shoe, different name and last. Both are named on the APMA’s official Brooks listing as carrying the Seal of Acceptance. Men’s widths are D, 2E and 4E; women’s B, D and 2E. List price $170.

What the spec sheet suggests — and what only a test can answer
This is the shoe for the foot that sidewalls cannot hold. Most “stability” shoes now use sidewalls or geometry to steer a mildly pronating foot. The Beast is built for the other patient: heavier, flatter, often with a tired posterior tibial tendon, where the foot needs a wide, firm, high-volume platform and a heel counter that does not yield. Brooks’ own word for it is “maximum support”, and at 12.5 oz the weight is the price of that structure.
10 mm drop and 38 mm of heel are the classic heel-pain geometry. A higher offset offloads the Achilles and plantar fascia at heel strike more than the 6–8 mm shoes elsewhere on this site. For an older walker with heel pain and a flat foot, the Beast’s numbers are the ones we would expect to work — which is exactly the kind of expectation a wear test exists to check.
“Accommodates orthotic inserts” plus the APMA seal. Brooks says the volume is there for an orthotic, and the APMA lists both the Beast and the Ariel by name. Neither statement gives you a millimetre; our Orthotic Volume Rating will.
What only the test can answer: torsional rigidity (the number that decides whether a flat foot is actually controlled), heel-counter stiffness, the true stack and drop (Brooks publishes none of them), and orthotic volume in the 2E and 4E.
Who this shoe is probably for
Read from the published specification, not from wear. Treat these as hypotheses the test will confirm or overturn.
- Flat, collapsing feet and posterior tibial tendon problems that need a firm, wide platform.
- Heavier walkers and runners with heel pain who do well at a 10 mm drop.
- Orthotic wearers with wide feet — Brooks builds the volume in, and 4E exists.
- You want a light or flexible shoe — 12.5 oz and a stiff platform are the point.
- Mild pronation with a tender arch — a sidewall shoe (Guide 19, Arahi 8, GT-2000 15) is easier to tolerate.
- Low-drop is what your Achilles has adapted to — 10 mm is a change.
What changed from the previous version
Brooks skipped the number 25 in this line, going from the Beast/Ariel GTS 24 to the GTS 26. Fleet Feet lists the changes as a heel pull tab and an updated RoadTack rubber outsole for durability and traction; the GuideRails support and DNA LOFT v3 midsole carry over. Brooks itself publishes no changelog.

What is the difference between the Brooks Beast GTS 26 and the Ariel GTS 26?
The Beast is the men’s name and the Ariel is the women’s name for the same maximum-support design; Brooks builds them on sex-specific lasts.
Is the Brooks Beast a motion-control shoe?
Brooks calls it maximum support. It is the most structured shoe Brooks sells and the one most podiatrists still mean when they say motion control.
