The short answer
For most men, the best walking shoe is a neutral running shoe in the correct width, with a heel stack in the mid-thirties of millimetres, a forefoot that rocks rather than folds, and a heel counter stiff enough that it does not collapse when you squeeze it. Brand matters far less than those four things. The single most common mistake I see in clinic is not the wrong model — it is the right model in a D width on a foot that needs a 2E.
What is actually different about a man’s walking shoe
Most of the advice in a general walking-shoe guide applies to everyone. Three things genuinely differ, and they are the reason this page exists rather than sending you to the main walking shoe guide.
“Medium” means something different. A men’s medium is a D. A women’s medium is a B. So a man who has always bought the standard width has been buying the equivalent of a women’s wide his whole life, and still may not have enough room — a genuinely broad male forefoot needs a 2E or 4E, and only some models are made in them.
Body mass compresses foam faster. Midsole foam is a spring that gets tired. The heavier the walker, the sooner a soft midsole stops rebounding and starts bottoming out, at which point a 40 mm stack protects the heel no better than a 25 mm one. For a heavier man, midsole density and durability matter more than the headline stack number.
Instep volume, not just length and width. Male feet tend to be deeper through the midfoot. A shoe can be the right length and still crush the top of the foot, which shows up as numbness across the instep or a lace pattern you keep having to loosen. Depth is why some men do better in a shoe with a removable insole — taking a 4 mm liner out buys volume nothing else will.
The five things that decide it
1. Width first, and D is not wide
Width is measured across the ball of the foot, not guessed from length. Going up half a size to buy width is the most common self-prescribed fix and the worst one: it adds length the foot does not need, which moves the shoe’s flex point past the ball of the foot so the shoe bends in the arch instead of at the toes.
Width availability is a real filter. Among the shoes on this site, the New Balance 880v15 is made in B, D, 2E and 4E for men; the Brooks Beast GTS 26 in D, 2E and 4E; the Brooks Addiction Walker 2 in B, D, 2E and 4E. The HOKA Transport 2 comes in medium and wide only. If you need a 4E, that fact alone decides your shortlist before any other criterion.
2. A midsole that is still working at month six
Stack height is what a shoe starts with, not what it keeps. A soft foam under a heavier walker loses rebound within a few hundred miles, and the shoe that felt best in the shop is often the one that fails first. If you are heavier, or you walk on concrete daily, choose the firmer of two otherwise similar shoes and replace it on mileage rather than on how it looks.
Published stack figures are also less reliable than they look. HOKA states 43 mm at the heel and a 5 mm drop for the Bondi 9; an independent lab measured 41.3 mm and 9.1 mm on the pair it cut open. Brooks states 36.5 mm and 10 mm for the Ghost 17, and the same lab measured 36.2 mm and 10.4 mm. One of those brands is describing the shoe you will actually buy far more closely than the other.
3. A rocker, because walking ends at the big toe
Every step you take finishes by bending the big toe joint. A forefoot rocker does part of that bend for you. That is why rockered shoes are the first thing I reach for with a stiff or arthritic big toe joint, and why they suit long days on hard floors even when nothing hurts yet. Test it by holding the heel and pressing the toe up: the shoe should roll, not hinge sharply.
4. A heel counter that does not fold
Squeeze the back of the shoe between finger and thumb. If it collapses flat, it will not hold a heel that wants to roll inward. This is the single check that takes five seconds in a shop and predicts more than any marketing term on the box. Pair it with a wide, flat base — a shoe that is narrow where it meets the ground is unstable however much foam sits above it.
5. Fit the foot you have at four in the afternoon
Feet swell across the day, and more so if you stand for a living or carry extra weight. A shoe fitted first thing in the morning is fitted to the smallest version of your foot. Buy late in the day, in the socks you actually wear, and leave a thumb’s width in front of the longest toe — which is not always the big one.

Brooks Ghost 17 — the safest first purchase
Neutral, 10 mm drop, 36.5 mm stated heel stack, about 286 g, in four widths. Its appeal is that almost nothing about it is extreme, and its published numbers survive independent measurement almost exactly — a lab found 36.2 mm and 10.4 mm against Brooks’ stated 36.5 and 10. Skip it if you need motion control, or if you want maximum cushioning for concrete — it is deliberately middle-of-the-road.
Brooks Beast GTS 26 — the one built for bigger men
This is the most genuinely men’s-specific shoe on the list: the Beast is the men’s build, the Ariel the women’s. Maximum support, a broad high-volume platform, GuideRails, and D, 2E and 4E widths. Brooks does not publish stack or drop; a retailer lists 38 mm heel, 28 mm forefoot and a 10 mm drop, and about 12.5 oz at size 9. It is heavy, and that is the trade for the structure.
Skip it if your foot is neutral or high-arched. Motion control on a foot that does not overpronate is uncomfortable and does nothing useful.
HOKA Bondi 9 — for concrete and long distances
The maximum-cushioning option, with a rocker that does real work at push-off. Worth knowing before you buy: HOKA states a 43 mm heel and a 5 mm drop, while an independent lab measured 41.3 mm and 9.1 mm. A 9 mm drop is a materially different shoe from a 5 mm one if you are choosing on drop for an Achilles problem.
Skip it if you want ground feel, or if you have needed ankle stability — a tall stack raises you further from the floor.
New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v15 — when width is the problem
Neutral daily trainer, 6 mm drop, about 299 g, and four genuine men’s widths from B to 4E. Note that New Balance does not publish stack height and retailers disagree about it — 38 mm heel at one, 40.5 mm at another. Buy this one for the width, which is real, not for the stack, which nobody will confirm.
Skip it if you need a pronounced rocker — it is a flatter, more conventional ride than the HOKAs.
Brooks Addiction Walker 2 — when it has to look like a shoe, not a trainer
Leather, motion control, an extended rollbar, four widths from B to 4E, $140. It is the answer for men who need support but cannot wear a running shoe to work. It is also heavy at 14.5 oz, and Brooks publishes neither stack height nor drop for it, which is worth saying plainly.
Skip it if you want light and fast. This is a shoe that prioritises control over everything else.
HOKA Transport 2 — for walking that is also commuting
A Vibram outsole, a removable insole, medium and wide, $155. The removable insole matters more than it sounds: it is what lets a deep foot or a custom orthotic fit. HOKA states a 5 mm drop; a lab measured 11.2 mm, one of the largest published-to-measured gaps we have logged.
Skip it if you need a 4E — wide is as far as it goes.

By what you actually do all day
You walk to and from work in them. The shoe has to survive pavement, look acceptable indoors and take an orthotic if you wear one. The Transport 2 is built for exactly this; the removable insole is the part that matters.
You stand on a hard floor, then walk home. Standing loads the arch for longer than walking does, because the arch never gets the brief unloading each swing phase provides. Prioritise a durable midsole and a wide base over a soft one, and read the standing all day guide alongside this one.
You walk long distances for fitness. Cushioning and a rocker start to earn their keep past about five miles, which is the case for the Bondi 9 — provided you have checked that a 9 mm measured drop suits you, rather than the 5 mm on the box.
You need one shoe that does everything. Buy the neutral daily trainer in the correct width and accept that it is second-best at each individual job. That is the Ghost 17 or the 880v15, and it is the right answer more often than men expect.
If you are a heavier walker
Above roughly 100 kg / 220 lb, three things change. Foam compresses further on every step, so a soft midsole reaches the end of its useful life sooner — replace on distance walked, not on how the upper looks. A wider base is worth more than a taller stack, because stability falls away as the platform narrows. And width usually needs to go up, since a heavier foot spreads more under load; a man who wears a D standing still may genuinely need a 2E walking.

What the shoe cannot do on its own
A shoe changes how load arrives at the foot. It does not change how much walking you have suddenly asked the foot to do. Most of the walking injuries I see in men followed a change in volume or surface rather than a change in footwear — a new job on a hard floor, a holiday spent on city pavements, a step-count target taken up too quickly. Increase distance gradually, keep two pairs in rotation if you walk daily, and treat pain that is worse on the first steps of the morning as a reason to be assessed rather than a reason to buy a fifth pair.

Are running shoes better than dedicated walking shoes?
Usually, yes. Running shoes are sold in more widths, updated more often, and independently measured far more thoroughly, so you can actually find out what you are buying. Dedicated walking shoes earn their place mainly where a shoe has to look formal, which is the case the Addiction Walker 2 exists for.
How do I know if I need a wide?
Stand on a sheet of paper and draw round the foot, then stand the shoe on the drawing. If the outline disappears under the shoe at the ball of the foot, the shoe is narrower than the foot that has to go in it. Doing this at the end of the day is more informative than doing it in the morning.
How often should I replace them?
Judge it on the midsole, not the tread. Press a thumb into the foam beside the heel: when it feels dead rather than springy, the shoe has stopped doing the job even if the outsole looks fine. Heavier walkers and concrete both shorten that window.
Do I need a stability shoe?
Only if your foot actually overpronates through stance, which is a movement and cannot be judged from a static footprint. Stability features on a neutral foot are at best neutral themselves and at worst uncomfortable. There is more on this in the overpronation guide.
How we would settle it
Every shoe named here is currently a spec analysis: we have read what the manufacturer publishes, checked it against independent laboratory figures where those exist, and said which we trust. What none of that settles is how a shoe behaves after a hundred miles on a hard floor, how much room the toe box really has once a foot is inside it, or whether a custom orthotic fits once the stock insole comes out. Those come from the bench and the road, and they are what the Podiatrist Tested Seal requires. Until a pair has been through that, this page tells you what the numbers say and who published them — and nothing more.
