We have not had this shoe under our own caliper. What we can tell you is that HOKA’s published numbers and an independent lab’s measured numbers disagree on this shoe by more than any other model we have looked at — and the gap is in the direction that changes who it suits.

What a foot and ankle surgeon reads into these numbers
The Bondi is HOKA’s maximum-cushion daily shoe and the one patients ask about most often by name. A 41 mm heel is a great deal of material under the rearfoot, and for someone with heel pain, a degenerative Achilles or a fat pad that has thinned with age, that is usually welcome.
The drop discrepancy is the clinically interesting part. Drop determines how load is split between the heel and the forefoot. At a true 5 mm the Bondi would sit the foot relatively flat and ask more of the calf and Achilles; at a measured 9.1 mm it does the opposite, tipping the foot forward less and unloading the posterior chain more. In practice that makes the Bondi a friendlier shoe for plantar fasciitis and insertional Achilles pain than the published 5 mm implies — and a slightly less good one if your problem is under the ball of the foot.
The other figure worth noting is the toe box: 94.1 mm at the widest point in a standard width, with narrow, wide and extra-wide also offered. That is a genuinely accommodating last, which matters for bunions, hammertoes and anyone who has been told to stop wearing tapered shoes.
What changed from the Bondi 8
The Bondi 9 is a taller shoe than the Bondi 8, and a lighter one — which is not the usual trade. Every figure below is either HOKA’s own published specification or RunRepeat’s independent lab measurement of each shoe. None of it was measured by us.

It grew, and the growth is mostly under the heel. By the lab figures the heel gained about 5 mm and the forefoot about 2 mm. That is a meaningful change in a shoe that was already one of the tallest daily trainers on the shelf. More foam under the heel is generally the friendlier arrangement during an Achilles or calf flare, because it shortens the distance the heel has to drop on landing. The same height is what makes a tall shoe feel less settled to someone with lateral ankle instability or balance concerns — that is not a fault, it is a trade, and which side of it you want depends on which problem you actually have.
The real drop is roughly double what the box says, and the gap widened. HOKA lists 4 mm on the 8 and 5 mm on the 9. The laboratory measured 6.2 mm and 9.1 mm. If you have been told to look for a low-drop shoe and you are choosing by the published number, this is the single most useful line on the page: on measurement the Bondi 9 sits closer to a conventional 8–10 mm trainer than to a low-drop one. That is not a criticism of the shoe. It is a reason to stop buying drop off a spec sheet.
It got lighter while getting taller. The lab weighed the 8 at 311 g and the 9 at 303 g. Adding stack and removing weight at the same time is the genuinely impressive part of this update, and it matters most to the people who wear a Bondi for twelve-hour shifts rather than for running.
It is marginally firmer, not softer. 41.5 to 43.0 on the Asker C scale, where a higher number is firmer. Anyone upgrading from an 8 expecting a plusher shoe because it is taller should know the foam itself did not get softer.
One comparison we are deliberately not making: toe-box width. The published lab figures for the two shoes are not measured on the same basis, so putting them side by side would imply a change we cannot actually support. When this pair goes under our own caliper we will measure both at the same landmark and publish that instead. As with any two individual pairs measured once, treat the direction of each change above as reliable and the exact millimetre as approximate.
Orthotic fit
The insole is removable, which is the necessary first condition for a custom orthotic. What actually decides the question is internal volume and heel-counter depth once the stock insole is out — which is exactly what our Orthotic Volume Rating measures and exactly what a specification cannot tell you. This shoe has no OVR yet. If you wear a custom device and you are choosing today, buy from somewhere with a returns policy and try the device in the shoe.
Who should be cautious with the Bondi 9
- Anyone with forefoot pain — metatarsalgia, a neuroma, sesamoiditis. If the measured 32.2 mm forefoot is right rather than the stated 38 mm, there is nearly 6 mm less protection under the ball of the foot than the spec sheet promises. Based on the published geometry, not on wear.
- Anyone who wants ground feel or a stable platform for lateral movement. A 41 mm heel stack is a tall, soft platform. It is built for straight-line cushioning, not for court sport, trail scrambling or anyone who feels unsteady on their feet. Based on the published geometry, not on wear.
- Anyone buying it specifically as a 5 mm-drop shoe. Two credible sources disagree by 4 mm. Until someone measures the pair in your size, treat the drop as unresolved.

Are the HOKA Bondi 9 good for running?
For easy and recovery running, yes. For fast running, no. The Bondi is HOKA’s maximum-cushion daily trainer — the lab-measured weight in the table above is heavy for anything you would race in, and the tall platform is built to absorb impact rather than return energy. If most of your mileage is easy, it is a reasonable choice; if you want one shoe that also does intervals, this is the wrong one. We have not run in this pair, so there is no score here.
What are the HOKA Bondi 9 good for?
Standing and walking all day, easy miles, and people whose main complaint is impact under the heel. The trade-off is agility: a tall, soft platform is less stable on uneven ground and slower to respond when you change direction. If you work on ladders, scaffolding or genuinely uneven surfaces, a lower and firmer shoe is the safer pick.
Are the HOKA Bondi 9 good for plantar fasciitis?
The two things that help plantar fasciitis in a shoe are cushioning under the heel and a rocker that reduces how hard the foot has to push off. The Bondi has both, which is why it comes up in this conversation constantly. Two honest caveats. Plantar fasciitis responds to load management — a shoe supports that, it does not replace it. And a very soft, very tall midsole suits some people badly, particularly anyone who also has balance or ankle-instability concerns. We have not tested this pair, so we are not scoring it for plantar fasciitis.
What is the heel-to-toe drop on the HOKA Bondi 9?
That depends on who you ask, and it is the most useful thing on this page. HOKA publishes 5 mm. RunRepeat’s lab measured 9.1 mm on a retail pair — a gap of more than 4 mm, and the largest published-versus-measured discrepancy of any shoe we have looked at. It matters because drop decides how load is shared between the Achilles tendon and the forefoot: a 5 mm shoe and a 9 mm shoe are not the same recommendation for someone with Achilles tendinopathy. Both figures and their sources are in the specification table above. We have not put our own caliper on this shoe.
Bondi 9 or Clifton 10?
Bondi if you want the most cushioning available and do not mind carrying it. Clifton if you want a lighter everyday shoe on a lower platform. Our specification analysis of the HOKA Clifton 10 sets out its published figures the same way. Neither has been through our measurement protocol yet, so neither carries a score or the seal.
Do podiatrists recommend the HOKA Bondi 9?
The Bondi is probably the single most-recommended HOKA in podiatry offices, and the logic is sound: maximum cushioning, a wide stable base, four widths including X-Wide, and a removable insole for orthotics. For a painful forefoot, a stiff big toe or a heel that hurts on hard floors, that combination is a reasonable clinical starting point. Two published figures on this page complicate the usual advice. HOKA states a 5 mm drop; the independent lab measured 9.1 mm. The forefoot stack is nearly 6 mm below the published number. A shoe chosen because of its low drop is not behaving like a low-drop shoe. We have not worn or measured this pair, so there is no score and no seal here. The open question a bench answers is whether the Bondi’s height costs the ankle stability that its width appears to give back.
