The short answer
For most people with plantar fasciitis, the HOKA to start with is the Bondi 9: the tallest heel in the range, a soft midsole, a wide toe box, four widths and — according to an independent lab — a real heel-to-toe drop of about 9 mm, not the 5 mm printed on the box. If you overpronate as well, the Arahi 8 adds a sidewall frame without much extra weight. If you are heavier, flat-footed and want the most support HOKA makes, it is the Gaviota 6. The Clifton 10 is the lighter, softer, higher-drop daily shoe for people whose heel pain is settling. The Transport 2 is the one to wear to work.
What decides between them is not marketing. It is four numbers — heel stack, drop, midsole softness and the presence of a frame — and whether your foot is neutral, pronating or needs to be held. The rest of this page walks through those numbers model by model, and names the people who should not buy each shoe.
Why HOKA keeps coming up for heel pain
Plantar fasciitis is a load problem. The fascia is a thick band running from the heel bone to the toes, and it is pulled tight every time the arch flattens under body weight and every time the toes bend at push-off. It hurts most on the first steps of the morning because the tissue has sat shortened overnight and is loaded before it has warmed up. A shoe cannot repair the fascia. What it can do is reduce how hard the heel is struck and how much tension the fascia takes on each step.
HOKA’s design language happens to line up with that mechanism better than most brands’. Three features do the work:
- A tall heel stack. More midsole under the heel spreads the impact of heel strike over more time and material, which lowers the peak force reaching the fascial attachment. HOKA’s road shoes sit at roughly 38–44 mm under the heel, which is at the top of the market.
- A heel-to-toe drop that is higher than printed. A higher heel reduces how far the ankle has to bend and takes tension off the calf, the Achilles and the fascia. HOKA prints 5–8 mm drops on most of its road shoes; the independent lab measurements we cite on each shoe page put several of them at 9–12 mm. For an acutely painful fascia that is welcome news, and it is one reason patients often feel better in a HOKA than the spec sheet would predict.
- A rocker sole. HOKA’s MetaRocker geometry rolls the foot forward at push-off instead of forcing the big toe to bend. Less big-toe bend means less winding-up of the fascia at the moment it is most loaded.
None of this is unique to HOKA, and none of it makes every HOKA right for every heel. A soft, tall platform helps a neutral foot and can feel unstable to a foot that rolls in, which is why the models below split into cushion-first shoes and frame-first shoes.

Reading this table. “Lab” figures are from RunRepeat, an independent lab that cuts shoes in half and measures them; they are cited on each shoe’s page. HOKA does not publish stack heights for the Arahi or the Gaviota at all, so those rows carry retailer and reviewer figures until our own calipers replace them; a dash means nobody has published that figure. Model by model: who each HOKA is for, and who should skip it
HOKA Bondi 9 — the default for a painful heel
The Bondi is the shoe patients ask about by name, and for plantar fasciitis the case for it is simple: the tallest heel in the line, a soft midsole (43 Asker C in the lab), a 94 mm toe box at its widest point, and narrow, medium, wide and extra-wide widths. The detail that matters most is the drop. HOKA says 5 mm; the lab measured 9.1 mm, because the forefoot is nearly 6 mm thinner than the spec sheet claims. For a heel that hurts, a real 9 mm drop is a better shoe than a real 5 mm drop — it unloads the fascia and the Achilles more on every step.
Skip it if your pain is under the ball of the foot rather than the heel (metatarsalgia, a neuroma, sesamoiditis) — the measured 32 mm forefoot is thinner than advertised. Skip it if you feel unsteady on your feet or have rolled an ankle recently: a 41 mm soft platform is a long way to fall. And if you overpronate hard, the Bondi has no frame to stop you — read on to the Arahi and Gaviota.
HOKA Clifton 10 — the same idea, lighter and softer
The Clifton 10 is what most runners mean when they say “my HOKAs”. In the lab it is actually taller at the heel than the Bondi (44.4 mm measured), softer (34.2 Asker C) and lighter (275 g), with the highest measured drop of the five at 12.4 mm against a stated 8 mm. That combination — tall, soft, high drop — is about as friendly to a plantar fascia as a running shoe gets, and it is the HOKA I would reach for once the acute morning pain is settling and you want to start walking or running distance again. It also comes in four widths and has the widest toe box of the group at 97 mm.
Skip it if you are heavier — a very soft midsole bottoms out sooner and gives up its cushioning faster under a heavier body — or if your foot needs to be held rather than cushioned. Soft foam and pronation are a poor pairing.
HOKA Arahi 8 — for heel pain plus overpronation
Every time the arch flattens, the fascia is stretched. A foot that rolls in flattens further and stretches it more, which is why overpronators with heel pain often do badly in a purely neutral shoe. The Arahi 8 answers that with HOKA’s Enhanced H-Frame — firmer foam wrapped around the heel and inside edge — on a stated 8 mm drop and roughly 39 mm of heel, at a weight (278 g) that is close to the Clifton. It carries the APMA Seal of Acceptance and comes in regular, wide and extra-wide. It is the HOKA I see most often on patients who were told to buy a HOKA for their heel but did not want the Bondi’s bulk. Our Bondi vs Arahi comparison goes deeper on that choice.
Skip it if your flat foot is severe or you have posterior tibial tendon dysfunction — an H-Frame is guidance, not motion control — or if you run custom orthotics: HOKA does not say whether the Arahi’s insole comes out, and until we measure the internal volume nobody can tell you whether your device will seat.
HOKA Gaviota 6 — the most support HOKA makes
The Gaviota 6 is the Arahi’s idea in a taller, wider, heavier platform with more frame: an Enhanced H-Frame, MetaRocker geometry, about 39 mm of heel and 33 mm of forefoot by reviewer measurement, in regular, wide and extra-wide. It is the HOKA to shortlist for a heavier patient with a flat, pronating foot who also wants a lot of cushioning under the heel. The thick forefoot also makes it the friendliest shoe in this group for someone whose plantar fasciitis comes with pain under the ball of the foot or a stiff big toe.
Skip it if your fascia clearly prefers a higher heel — at a stated 6 mm the Gaviota has the lowest drop here, and a tight Achilles may notice. Skip it if weight matters to you (291 g is the heaviest stability shoe in the line) and, again, if you rely on a custom orthotic: HOKA publishes nothing about the insole or the internal volume.
HOKA Transport 2 — the one for work and the commute
The Transport 2 is a walking and commuting shoe with a Vibram outsole, a quick-lace system and a low-key look, built on a sugarcane-blend EVA midsole. The lab numbers are the interesting part: HOKA states 5 mm of drop, the lab measured 11.2 mm, because the forefoot is thin at 26.8 mm under a 38 mm heel. That geometry — high heel, thin forefoot — is good for a painful heel and less good for a painful forefoot. Skip it if you have forefoot pain (the thinnest forefoot on this page), if you need more than two widths, or if you want it for running — it is not built for that.
The printed drop is not the real drop
This deserves its own section because it changes which HOKA suits which foot. Three of the five shoes here have been cut in half by an independent lab, and in all three the measured drop is well above the printed figure:

For plantar fasciitis this is mostly good news — a higher real drop unloads the heel — but it cuts the other way for anyone buying a HOKA because they were told to find a low-drop shoe, and it means the forefoot has less material under it than the box claims. We are not adjudicating between HOKA and the lab; we have not measured these pairs ourselves. But until someone measures the pair in your size, treat HOKA’s printed drop as a floor, not a fact.
Which HOKA for which foot
- Neutral foot, heel pain, mostly walking or standing: Bondi 9. Widest range of widths, tallest heel, real 9 mm drop.
- Neutral foot, heel pain settling, want to run or walk distance: Clifton 10. Lighter, softer, highest measured drop.
- Heel pain plus mild-to-moderate overpronation: Arahi 8. Frame without much weight, 8 mm drop, APMA seal.
- Heel pain, flat pronating foot, heavier body, or forefoot pain as well: Gaviota 6. Most frame, thickest forefoot, at the cost of weight and a 6 mm drop.
- Heel pain at work, need a shoe that looks like a shoe: Transport 2. High real drop, Vibram outsole, thin forefoot.
- You wear a custom orthotic: Bondi 9 or Clifton 10 for now — both have a removable insole by lab report. The Arahi and Gaviota are unknowns until we publish an Orthotic Volume Rating. Buy from somewhere with a returns policy and try your device in the shoe.
When HOKA is the wrong brand for your heel
HOKA is not a treatment and it is not right for everyone with heel pain. Three groups in particular should look elsewhere:
- Anyone with balance problems, neuropathy in the feet, or a recent ankle sprain. A 40 mm soft platform raises you a long way off the ground and dampens the feedback your ankle uses to correct itself. A lower, firmer shoe is safer.
- Anyone who needs lateral stability — court sports, trail scrambling, ladder work. Tall soft foam is built for straight-line cushioning.
- Anyone whose heel pain is not plantar fasciitis. Pain under the heel that started after a fall, pain with numbness or burning, pain that is worse at rest or at night, or heel pain in a child is not a shoe problem. It needs an examination. The 30-second test before you buy any of them
Pick the shoe up. Squeeze the heel counter between thumb and finger: it should resist, not fold. Hold the heel and the toe and twist: the midfoot should not wring out like a towel. Then push the toe up: the shoe should bend at the ball of the foot, not in the middle. Every HOKA on this page should pass the twist and the bend; the heel counter is the one that varies between models and between wide and standard fits, and it is the check that matters most if you pronate. Shoes are one part of the treatment
The right HOKA takes load off the fascia while you walk. It does not lengthen a tight calf, it does not fix a foot that has been collapsing for a decade, and it does nothing for the hours you spend barefoot at home. Calf and plantar-fascia stretching, a supportive house shoe, and — if the pain has lasted more than six to eight weeks — an examination to rule out the things that look like plantar fasciitis but are not, all matter as much as the shoe.
Frequently asked questions
Are HOKA shoes good for plantar fasciitis?
For most people, yes. HOKA’s tall heel stack, rocker sole and higher-than-printed drop all reduce the load on the plantar fascia. The exceptions are people with balance problems or ankle instability, who do better in a lower and firmer shoe, and people whose heel pain is not actually plantar fasciitis.
Which HOKA is best for plantar fasciitis?
The Bondi 9 for a neutral foot that mostly walks and stands; the Clifton 10 for a neutral foot that wants to run; the Arahi 8 if you also overpronate; the Gaviota 6 if you are heavier or flat-footed and need the most support. None has been scored by us yet, so these are recommendations from the published and lab-measured specifications.
Bondi or Clifton for plantar fasciitis?
Both are neutral, tall and high-drop by lab measurement. The Bondi 9 is firmer, heavier and comes in four widths with a slightly narrower toe box; the Clifton 10 is softer, lighter, taller at the heel and has the highest measured drop of any HOKA on this page. Acute, severe heel pain and heavier bodies usually do better in the Bondi; settling pain and running usually favour the Clifton.
Is the HOKA Arahi good for plantar fasciitis?
Yes, if you overpronate. The Arahi 8’s H-Frame limits how far the arch collapses on each step, which limits how far the fascia is stretched. On a stated 8 mm drop and roughly 39 mm of heel it also cushions heel strike well. For a neutral foot the frame is unnecessary and the Bondi or Clifton is the better buy.
Can I put my custom orthotics in HOKA shoes?
The Bondi 9, Clifton 10 and Transport 2 have removable insoles, which is the first requirement. Whether your device then seats without lifting your heel out of the shoe depends on internal volume, which HOKA does not publish and we have not yet measured. Try the orthotic in the shoe before you commit.
Do podiatrists recommend HOKA?
Many do, for heel pain, forefoot arthritis and anyone who needs a lot of cushioning, and three of these models (the Bondi, Clifton and Arahi) carry the APMA Seal of Acceptance. That seal reviews a manufacturer’s submission; it does not measure the shoe. Our reviews will publish the measurements.
