Shoe Weight Chart (2026): 23 Shoes Compared, and What the Box Leaves Out
Where these numbers come from: every figure on this page is a published weight — the manufacturer’s, or a named third party’s where the manufacturer publishes none. We have not weighed these shoes ourselves, and the page says so rather than implying a bench. What we have done is collect all 26 in one place and check what each brand actually discloses, which turns out to be the more interesting question.

The finding: a weight without a size is not a specification
Shoe weight changes with size. A men’s US 12 of the same model is meaningfully heavier than a US 8 — the usual working figure is around 10 grams per half size, so three sizes is roughly 60 g, which is close to half the entire spread on the chart above. That means a published weight is only useful if it comes with the size it was taken at.
So we checked all 26. Here is what the brands disclose:
- Two publish a weight and the size it was weighed at.
- Sixteen publish a number with no size attached.
- Six publish no weight at all, so the figure here comes from a named third party — who does state the size, usually a men’s US 9.
- One publishes only a pair weight, which has to be halved before it can be compared with anything.
- One publishes nothing anywhere we could find.
Put plainly: on the one specification that every brand is happy to describe with an adjective — light, lightweight, featherlight — almost none of them publish an actual specification. Two out of twenty-six is not an oversight, it is a category-wide habit, and it is why cross-brand weight comparisons on shopping sites should be read with suspicion. Ours included: the table below is honest about which rows are comparable and which are not.

One shoe, men’s, as published. “Brand publishes none” means the figure comes from a named third party and the source column says who. Where a brand states no size, the number is still the brand’s own — it simply cannot be compared like-for-like with a row that does state one. Each shoe’s page carries the full source and the date it was read.
When shoe weight actually matters
Weight is the specification people either obsess over or ignore entirely, and both are wrong. It matters enormously in a few situations and hardly at all in most.
It matters most: a foot that cannot lift itself
If a nerve problem has weakened the muscles that pull the front of the foot up — the pattern behind foot drop in an L5 nerve root problem or a compressed peroneal nerve — every gram is a gram the hip has to hoist through the swing phase, and the toe catches earlier when it does not clear. This is the one group for whom a light shoe beats a cushioned one outright, and the one group nobody sells “lightweight” to. A 411 g shoe on a foot that cannot dorsiflex is a trip hazard with a comfortable insole.
It matters a lot: small children
An adult carrying 300 g per foot is carrying about 0.4% of body weight. A 12-kilogram toddler in a chunky “supportive” shoe can be carrying two or three times that proportion, on legs that are still learning to swing. It is one of the reasons our guide to toddler shoes puts light above nearly everything else, and why the heavy, stiff, high-topped first walker is the wrong instinct.
It matters measurably: distance running
This is the best-studied case. Laboratory work has repeatedly put the metabolic cost of extra shoe mass at roughly one per cent of running energy cost per 100 grams added per shoe. On the chart above, the difference between the lightest and the heaviest is about 1.6% of your running economy — real, but smaller than most people assume, and easily swamped by whether the shoe fits and whether you can run in it without pain.
It matters less than you think: walking
The same effect exists in walking but it is smaller, because you are not accelerating the shoe through the air nearly as fast. For an hour’s walk on a hard floor, the cushioning and the fit will decide how you feel far more than 40 g will.
It barely matters: standing
If your job is standing rather than walking, shoe weight is close to irrelevant — the shoe is supported by the floor, not by you. Spend the decision on the sole, the fit and the width instead. This is why several of the heaviest shoes on the chart are perfectly good work shoes.
What you give up for a light shoe
Weight is not free to remove. Almost every gram saved comes out of something you might have wanted:
- Midsole foam. The tallest, softest stacks are heavy because there is more material. The maximal-cushion shoes cluster in the upper half of the chart for exactly this reason.
- Upper structure. A knit upper with no overlays is lighter and holds the foot less firmly — which matters if you need the shoe to stay put on a weak foot.
- Durability. Thin outsole rubber saves weight and wears through sooner, especially at the heel edge.
- Leather and weatherproofing. The two heaviest shoes here are a leather walking shoe and a heavily built support shoe. Neither is badly designed; both bought their stability with mass.
- Depth for a device. Extra volume for an orthotic or a brace is extra material.
The honest version is that “light” is a trade, not a virtue. Decide which of the situations above you are in, and buy accordingly.
How to weigh your own shoes
Thirty seconds, a kitchen scale, and you will have a better figure than most product pages carry.
- Weigh one shoe, not the pair, and say which foot — left and right often differ by a few grams.
- Weigh it as you will wear it, with the insole in and the laces on. If you run an orthotic, weigh it with the orthotic in and the stock insole out; that is your real number, and it is often 30–60 g different from the box.
- Write down the size. This is the whole point of the page. A weight without a size tells the next person nothing.
- Compare like with like. Your US 11 is not comparable to a review’s US 9 — expect roughly 10 g per half size.
If you are choosing between two shoes and one is only 20 g lighter, that difference is inside the noise of size, insole and lacing. Buy the one that fits.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a running shoe weigh?
A men’s cushioned daily trainer is usually 250–300 g (roughly 9–10.5 oz) for one shoe. Racing shoes go well below that and support or walking shoes well above it. Women’s versions of the same model are typically 10–15% lighter because the sample size is smaller.
Is a lighter shoe always better?
No. It is better for a weak foot, for a small child and, marginally, for distance running. It is close to irrelevant for standing, and the weight usually comes off the cushioning, the upper structure or the outsole — all things you may have wanted.
Why do two sites list different weights for the same shoe?
Almost always because they weighed different sizes, and usually neither says which. Roughly 10 g per half size accounts for most published disagreements. A retail sample that includes packaging or the box explains the rest.
Does 100 grams really change anything?
In running, about one per cent of your energy cost per 100 g per shoe — measurable in a lab, hard to feel on a Tuesday. For a foot with weak dorsiflexion, 100 g is the difference between clearing a threshold and catching it. Context decides.
Do orthotics add much weight?
A custom device typically adds more than the stock insole it replaces, but the swap is usually a net change of tens of grams rather than hundreds. Weigh the shoe with your own device in it — that is the number that applies to you, and nobody publishes it.
Why doesn’t this page have measured weights?
Because we have not weighed these shoes, and we do not publish numbers we have not taken. When shoes come onto the bench, weight at a stated size is the first figure in our protocol — and it will appear here as a second column beside the published one, exactly like the stated-versus-measured heel drop chart.

What we will measure
Weight is the easiest measurement in footwear and one of the least reliably published, which makes it a natural first entry in a measured column. Our protocol weighs a single shoe on a calibrated scale, at a stated size, with the stock insole in and out — the second figure being the one that matters to anyone who runs an orthotic, and the one that appears nowhere at all today.
Until then this page does what can be done honestly: it collects what the brands say, names every source, and tells you which rows are comparable.
