Shoe Price vs Specs: What $200 Actually Buys

We compared list price against measured heel stack, forefoot stack, toe-box width and weight for 41 shoes. Price predicts almost none of it — the $200 shoe has the narrowest toe box on the site.

Nothing on this page has been measured by us. The list prices are the brands’ own. The stack, width and weight figures are published by the brand, by a named retailer, or by RunRepeat, which cuts shoes in half and measures them — each one credited on that shoe’s own page. What this page adds is the arithmetic nobody publishes: what the price actually predicts. How we test →

List price is the one specification every brand publishes. Forty-one of the forty-three shoes on this site have one, against thirty-three with a published heel stack and thirty-one with a measured toe-box width. So we did the obvious thing and asked what the price buys. Across the shoes where we hold both numbers, it buys almost nothing you can feel: the correlation between price and forefoot stack is −0.00, and between price and toe-box width +0.11. The most expensive shoe here has the narrowest toe box on the site.

What the price does predict

One thing, weakly, and not in your favour. Price and weight correlate at r = +0.38 across 34 shoes: on average, the more you pay, the heavier the shoe. That is not a scandal — it mostly reflects that expensive shoes tend to be maximal-cushion models with more foam in them, and more foam weighs more. But it is worth saying plainly, because “premium” and “light” are sold as the same idea and here they are mildly opposed.

It is also worth knowing what price does not buy that you might reasonably expect it to. We checked whether dearer shoes come in more width fittings, since that is a real manufacturing cost — and then we threw the calculation away, because brands publish width availability as free text in four incompatible formats and any average would have been measuring our parser rather than the shoes. The individual cases are clear enough without it: the $140 Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24 is offered in four fittings and the $175 Brooks Glycerin 23 in two. If you need a 2E or a 4E, spending more is not the route to it — choosing the right model is.

What it does not predict

  • Forefoot stack: r = −0.00 across 31 shoes. Not weak — absent. How much material sits between your metatarsal heads and the pavement has no relationship whatsoever to what you paid for it.
  • Toe-box width: r = +0.11 across 30 shoes. Room across the front of the foot is the single thing most people are actually shopping for when a bunion or a neuroma hurts, and price tells you nothing about it.
  • Heel stack: r = +0.05 across 31 shoes. Effectively nothing.
  • Weight: r = +0.38 across 34 shoes. The only real signal, and dearer means heavier.

The $200 shoe with the narrowest toe box on the site

The clearest way to see this is to look at the top of the price list. The New Balance Made in USA 990v6 is the most expensive shoe we hold measurements for, at $200. On the two figures that decide whether a forefoot has room, it is the least generous shoe in the whole set: 67.3 mm across the big toe — the narrowest of the 31 shoes we hold a width for — and 23.8 mm of forefoot stack, second-thinnest of 31.

Compare that with the Altra Paradigm 8 at $170, whose 82.3 mm toe box is the widest of any shoe here with a published price — fifteen millimetres wider than the $200 shoe, for thirty dollars less. Both figures come from the same laboratory, cutting a retail pair the same way, so that comparison is like for like. (One shoe on the site is wider still — the Altra Torin 8 at 83.6 mm — but no list price is published for it, so it sits out of every calculation on this page.)

We have deliberately not run the same headline comparison on forefoot stack, and the reason deserves a paragraph of its own. The 990v6’s 23.8 mm is a laboratory figure, taken by cutting a retail pair in half. Most of the thick-forefoot shoes it would be compared against publish a brand or retailer figure instead, and those two kinds of number are not interchangeable. The Skechers Aero Burst is the cleanest illustration on this site: Skechers publishes 36 mm of forefoot, a specialist retailer lists 37 mm, and the laboratory that cut one in half measured 32.9 mm. The heel figures in that same comparison agree to within 0.3 mm — the disagreement is entirely in the forefoot, and it runs in the direction you would expect. So setting a $200 lab-measured forefoot against a $155 brand-published one is not a fair fight, and we are not going to stage it.

None of this makes the 990v6 a bad shoe. It is made in the United States from good materials, it comes in a 6E, and people who like it like it for reasons this page cannot measure. It makes a narrower point: the price told you none of that, and it did not tell you the shoe was narrow either. If room is what your foot needs, the number to read is the width, and it is not on the box.

Why we threw one shoe out, and why it matters

This is the part most charts leave out. Our first pass through these numbers said price and heel stack correlated at r = +0.59 — a real-looking relationship, and a tidy story: money buys stack height. It was one data point. The OOFOS OOahh Slide is a $60 recovery sandal with a 20 mm heel, sitting alone in the bottom-left corner of a chart where every other shoe costs $140 or more. Remove it — not because the figure is wrong, but because a recovery slide is not the same product as a running shoe — and the correlation falls to +0.05.

With about thirty shoes in each comparison, a single atypical product can move a correlation by half its range. So every figure on this page is calculated on the same set, with the slide excluded from all four panels, and we are telling you that rather than letting the tidier number stand. If you take one methodological habit from this site, take that one: before believing a correlation, remove its most extreme point and look again.

What fifty dollars more actually buys

Correlations across a whole range can hide a step change, so we also split the shoes at the median — $160 — and compared the two halves directly. This is the comparison a shopper actually faces: the $150 shoe on the shelf, or the $180 one next to it. The recovery slide is excluded here too.

Three of the four differences are smaller than the spread within each group, which is a statistician’s way of saying they are not differences at all. The toe box is the only one that even leans the direction people expect, and 1.6 mm across a group of thirty is not something a foot can detect — particularly when the gap between the widest and narrowest shoe on this site is 15 mm, nine times larger, and has nothing to do with price.

The clearest single illustration sits at the two ends of our price list. The New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v15 costs $149.99 and measures 75.1 mm across the forefoot — wider than every shoe here except three. The New Balance Made in USA 990v6 costs $199.99 and measures 67.3 mm. Fifty dollars more, from the same brand, in the same week, for 7.8 mm less room.

What price does buy, that we cannot put a number on

A page like this is only honest if it is equally clear about the other side. Price is not random, and the things it buys are real — they are simply not the things a specification sheet records, which is exactly why they never show up in a chart.

  • How long the foam lasts. Two midsoles can read the same on day one and be different shoes at 400 miles. Nobody publishes a compression-set figure, so no chart on the internet can show this — ours included.
  • Outsole rubber. Carbon rubber under the heel, blown rubber under the forefoot, and how much of the midsole is left exposed. This is visible in photographs and cheap to check yourself; it is also where budget shoes most often economise.
  • Upper materials and construction. Engineered mesh with proper reinforcement, seamless overlays, a lining that does not abrade — these matter enormously to anyone with a bunion, a hammertoe or a diabetic foot, and they are invisible to every number on this page.
  • The size and width run. A brand offering 2A through 6E in half sizes to 15 is spending money most brands do not. That spending is worth more to a hard-to-fit foot than any amount of midsole.
  • Returns and after-sale. A 90-day wear-test return policy is a material part of what you are buying, because it is the only way to find out whether a shoe fits your foot.

So the finding is narrower than “expensive shoes are a con,” and more useful. It is this: price is not a proxy for fit. If what you need is room across the forefoot, or a specific amount of material under the heel, or a shoe that does not weigh you down, the price tag will not tell you whether you are getting it. The measured figure will, and it is free to look up — on this site or anywhere else that publishes one.

Every shoe on this site, by price

All 41 shoes for which a list price is published, highest first. An em dash means the figure has not been published by anyone we would cite — not that it is zero. Every figure links back to the review that credits its source. Prices are the brand’s own US list price, read in September 2026, and they move.

One caveat on reading down a column. The toe-box column is the only one where every figure comes from the same place: all 31 were measured by the same laboratory, cutting a retail pair the same way. The stack and weight columns mix sources — some brand-published, some from a named retailer, some laboratory — and as the Aero Burst shows above, those can differ by several millimetres on the same shoe. Each row links to the review that names its source. Compare within a column by all means, but when two figures are close, check what kind of number each one is before you let it decide anything.

Questions people ask

Is there a price below which shoes get genuinely worse?

Almost certainly, but it is below where this site shops. Only three of our 41 priced shoes cost under $140, so we cannot honestly say anything about the $50 shoe in a discount bin. What we can say is that between $140 and $200 — where 38 of the 41 sit, and where most people with foot pain are actually choosing — the geometry does not improve as the price climbs. If a floor exists, the whole of this range is above it.

Do dearer shoes at least come in more widths?

Not reliably, and we are going to decline to give you a number here. Brands publish width availability as free text in at least four incompatible formats — “Narrow, Medium, Wide, X-Wide” on one product page, “M: D/2E/4E · W: B/D/2E” on the next, and a paragraph of caveats on a third — so any average we computed would be measuring our own parser, not the shoes. What we can show you is the two ends, which need no arithmetic: the $140 Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24 comes in Narrow, Medium, Wide and X-Wide; the $175 Brooks Glycerin 23, from the same brand, comes in two. Width availability is a decision about the last and the production run, and it tracks the model, not the price.

Why is the weight correlation the only real one, and why does it go that way?

Because the dearer shoes in this set are mostly maximal shoes — more foam, thicker uppers, more structure — and all of that has mass. Price and weight correlate at +0.38, which is modest but survives removing any single shoe. It is worth knowing if you stand all day: the heavier shoe is not the better one for you, and here you are more likely to pay extra for it. Our shoe weight chart ranks every figure we hold.

Does a sale price change any of this?

It strengthens it. Last season’s model is usually the same mould with a different upper print, discounted 30 to 40 per cent. Since the list price was not buying geometry at full price, it is not losing you any on sale either — you are buying the same stack height and the same toe box for less. The one thing worth checking is that the version number is the one you measured, because brands do change moulds between versions without saying so loudly.

Then what should I use instead of price to choose?

The measured figure for whichever dimension your foot actually cares about. If your forefoot is the problem, use toe-box width. If your heel is, use heel stack and midsole softness. If you are on your feet eight hours, use weight. The shoe spec database puts every published figure on this site in one sortable table, with the source of each one named — which is the part that lets you check us.

What happens next on this page

Two things will change these numbers, and both will be shown rather than quietly folded in. The first is coverage: 33 of 43 shoes have a published heel stack and 31 a toe-box width, so every additional measured figure moves the correlations a little, and we will state the sample size each time it changes. The second is our own bench. When we start publishing measured widths and stack heights ourselves, this page gets a second set of points computed only on figures we took — and if our numbers tell a different story from the brands’ and the laboratories’, that difference is the finding, and it will be the headline here.

Prices are re-checked quarterly. If a shoe on this page has moved more than $10 from what you see at the brand, the table is stale and we would like to know — the figure in the row is what we read, on the date at the top.
